Dalglish admits Liverpool must learn from meltdown

Kenny Dalglish admits Liverpool must learn from their stunning meltdown against QPR if they are to avoid their Premier League season drifting to a disappointing end.

Dalglish's side threw away a two-goal lead in the final 13 minutes to lose 3-2 to struggling QPR at Loftus Road on Wednesday.

And the Reds boss admits he is concerned his side may suffer in the FA Cup semi-final, when they face Everton or Sunderland at Wembley, if they continue to fail to close games out.

But Dalglish was puzzled as to how Liverpool managed to go from being in control thanks to goals from Sebastian Coates and Dirk Kuyt, to leaving west London with nothing after Shaun Derry, Djibril Cisse and Jamie Mackie had hit back.

Dalglish, who had admitted ahead of the game that his side need to win all 10 of their fixtures if they were to hope for a top four spot, said: "I don't think anybody saw it coming.

"We started fantastically, the only thing that was missing was a bit of luck in front of goal.

"We could have been three or four-nil up by half time. There is not much more we can say, we don't have any answers as to what happened. We have to find them if we are to learn from it.

"The main thing we have to learn is that it is not over until it's over.

"There was a fair bit of feeling about how we would approach the game and how the players were feeling after qualifying for the FA Cup semi-final.

"Most of the game we were dominant, professional. They did concentrate for most of the game and we were constructive in so many parts of it. But QPR have walked away with three points.

"We never got what we deserved, but that is life, I suppose. I can't explain it."

For QPR, both Mackie and manager Mark Hughes believe the result could be the catalyst for survival.

The win was only their second in 17 games and took them out of the bottom three and two points clear of the relegation zone.

Hughes said: "It could be a defining moment. I think we have to make sure it is. We might look back at tonight and say this is where it all turned for us.

"It's huge in terms of the belief we can take out of it, but it is important we look to the weekend and make sure it doesn't go to waste."

Goal-hero Mackie added: "You could see the reaction of the fans, that changes our season now. It was a great performance and we really dug in."

Liverpool had started the game well and could have been 4-0 up inside the opening 12 minutes, as Luis Suarez, Martin Skrtel and Kuyt had chances denied.

Coates fired Liverpool in front nine minutes after the break with a spectacular overhead kick, before Kuyt latched onto the rebound from Paddy Kenny's save off Stewart Downing's shot to double the visitors' lead.

But Derry rose to meet Adel Taarabt's corner to head in his first goal for QPR, before Cisse did the same to level the scores against his old employers.

And Mackie took advantage of some sloppy defending in stoppage time to race onto Luke Young's through-ball and score what could be a crucial goal for both ends of the table.

Hughes added: "I have possibly have had a comeback like this as a manager but I can't think of one. Tonight is right up there and I think everyone sensed the emotion and significance of the result.

"We may look back at this result and say this is where it all changed for us. We have to make sure this is the case."

Five Top Elements In Car Audio Systems For Best Quality

When buying vehicle audio systems there are numerous considerations such as the subwoofer quality or possibly the watts output in the speakers. Having an in-dash stereo system for audio or normal auto radio is not uncommon practice with all automobiles. In this way it is attainable to tune in to whatever you want when you are jammed in site visitors right behind the wheel for hours.

Its an crucial car aspect

When picking any sort of car component there is a listing of variables for you to appear at which will requires evaluating the expense against the general overall performance of the component. This genuinely is certainly no different from shopping for audio mobil. If you should be probably not clued up on getting mobile entertainment goods that is meant to imitate the common of home theatre systems then read on to get my personal best 5 considerations when getting mobile entertainment systems.

Factor 1 ? Zero expense ipods and mp3 player

There is totally no such point as entirely free bonuses in terms of acquiring a quantity of merchandise simultaneously. What i am saying by this is whenever you purchase say any kind of a radio for the car and then receive a totally free ipod or possibly mp3 player then you certainly will require to go by means of the competitive promoting cost on the automobile radio. What i mean by that is the cost on the radio could have currently been raised to be able to make it feasible for a completely totally free ipod device or mp3 music player for becoming extra as a bunch.

Aspect 2 ? Regular of electrical devices is normally price specific

Usually in instances where something seem too excellent to be correct probably you need to have to analyze it correctly to check there are really no invisible problems. Auto audio systems frequently enhance in good quality for the cause that cost increases the same as nearly any other electro-mechanical item around. Must you do even so discover a great deal that may contain a complimentary digital photo frame which is not that expensive, then do not be uncertain to take advantage of it.

Factor 3 ? Pioneer and Bose are what you want for automobile audio program

Select the top rated brands and you will have peace of thoughts. The best mobile entertainment devices brands such as for instance Bose and Pioneer in no way bring out audio gear except if it has been meticulously subjected to testing and is guaranteed in complete to perform to superior good quality levels for an excessive period of time. This is actually the circumstance merely since they want to defend their brand image by way of often fulfilling their buyers.

Element 4 ? Audio speakers and subs

The superior of beats that is electronically designed is certainly restricted by the loudspeakers or subs and car audio systems are not any distinctive from this certain. For cars it is finest to have a surround sound setup employing many loudspeakers in order that all passengers could possibly get a excellent audio expertise, not just the driver.

Element 5 ? Modern or old?

Exactly how modern your audio program within a box depends on the make of the product. FitFarms the Holistic Style Boot Camp Company is Offering ...

Posted by admin on March 21st, 2012

Spring is here the sun is out and the UK?s holistic weight loss boot camp programmes are starting to heat up as well.

(PRWEB UK) 21 March 2012

The winter months seem to have passed us by already and the boot camp programmes for women and men in the UK are starting to gear up for a busy period.

FitFarms is a fitness retreat with a difference it does not just look at short term or seasonal weight loss. The FitFarms weight loss retreat takes a long term view on their guests health and fitness. The camp even offers a 3 month after care programme which is online and offline. The programme has been designed to change the way people think about exercise. Then when guest go home there is more chance for the healthy lifestyles and fitness levels to be maintained.

The United States of America health organisation has just reported another 4 percent increase in obesity. This figure has increased every year since 1989. More people now die of eating too much than too little in the United States of America.

The holistic weight loss boot camp also offers a more softer approach with offering towels, robes and complimentary shower gels that their guest can use during the seven day stay at the fitness retreat.

Last year the ?100 discount spring promotion did not end until mid summer due to the huge success of the spring months.

The holistic boot camp suggest to book early this year due to being ahead on bookings. The retreat is full on all the March months and the next available date is not until 20th April.

The weight loss retreat use to run retreats for the big superstore giant Tesco PLC from 2007 up to and including 2011. The supermarket chain unfortunately stopped their fitness retreats due to a very competitive market place. The company then kindly agreed to send their clients to FitFarms which has certainly helped with increasing the numbers on the weeks.

There is also a maximum number that the weight loss boot camp will take which is 25 but it would be more fair to say that the average over the year is 22. The ratio of guest to trainers is five to one which does not include the chef and all the specialised fitness camp instructors.

If you want a space it maybe a good idea to spring ahead today and take the boot camp up on their seasonal offer.

Top 5 Anticipated E-Readers of 2010 | ebook-reader-vergleich.org

In 2010 thus far we have seen a flurry of news and press releases announced on new E-Readers hitting the the market. With all of the new units coming out the market is becoming increasingly competitive as new and old companies alike rush out new devices to meet consumer demand.

Up until 2009 the E-Reader market was held under sway by the top dominant forces such as Amazon, Sony, and to a lesser extent, iRex and Astak. most of these companies had their own book stores where they sold E-Books online right to your device.

In 2010 with the rise of the Google Android operating system new e-readers are flooding into the market because they do not need their own proprietary book store solution, they could make apps to allow users to connect to other book stores. Google Android is the base operating system of 75% of all the new e-readers coming out in 2010 and allows a tremendous flexibility to allow your e-reader to connect to the internet, surf the internet, play games and have a wider choice of online book stores so you can hunt around for the best deals Content was amping the market, as up until 2010 most e-readers had to have their own book store or hard wired applications to let you connect to the store of the manufacturers choice. Check out our E-Reader Forum for the latest news on this.

With the rise of the standard e-book format ?ePub? many new electronic readers are being made to read some of the web?s most popular formats, such as PDF, EPUB, TXT, RTF, HTML and others.

With the new breed of E-Readers coming out, more companies are releasing new e-readers because It is more cost effective for a company to release an e-reader and not invest millions of dollars into developing their own book store, when they can simply get a commission referring their users to other bookstores. or bypass the stores all together and allow users to download Android Market place applications right to their devices made by other online bookstores.

Now there is of course some companies with the exception to this rule such as Barnes and Noble, with the Nook with exclusive access to their own E-Book Store. the soon to be released Kobo with its large online offerings is now coming out with a low cost entry into the e-reader market of its own. this article will talk about the top 5 most eagerly anticipated E-Readers to look out for in 2010.

Kobo E-Reader

The Kobo is going to be launched in may with a economically viable price of $149.00 US. It will have access to the Kobo book store, boasting a library of over 250,000 titles. Kobo is owned by Indigo Books and Music. the Kobo features a six inch screen, a USB port, and very minimal buttons. It only has 1 GB of internal storage but it does have a SD Card slot to hold more books in its internal memory. the Kobo also has the ability to read ePub and PDF files. It does not have WI-FI nor 3G and is not trying to compete with the e-reader models brimming with expensive features. what we really like about the eReader is the interface. the chapter lists are big and clear, the main ?I?m Reading? page gives a newspaper front-page-like overview of the newspapers and books you?re currently reading, and you can even choose to display your books in an iPad-like bookshelf metaphor. When you power down, it shows the book?s cover instead of those awful Kindle screen-savers.

There are many budget E-Readers on the market already sold at places such as Wal-Mart and other box stores, you may have not heard their names before. If you are looking for a really cheap Entry level E-Reader there is none better then the Kobo. It is made by an established company, will be sold in Canada and the US and will have a tremendous amount of support.

Spring Design Alex

The Spring Design Alex eReader provides takes dual screen electronic readers to the next level. It will be sold in April for $399 and it is available in either a black or a white case. the Alex features combines dual screens, one of which is a full color touch screen to navigate the menus and a separate E-INK screen to read E-Books. the bottom color touch screen is 3.5 inches while its top screen to read books is 6.5 inches.

The Alex doesn?t come with integrated 3G wireless. instead, you can connect the device to your PC via USB or to the Internet via 802.11b/g wireless. Spring Design has announced they are working on a 3G model out later in the year. the content distribution system is not in place yet, they are working on offering their own bookstore. Spring Design has in the last few months signed a deal with Boarders and Kobo Books. an executive at Boarders had this to say ?Our agreement with Spring Design represents another step in our digital strategy, which continues to focus on offering book lovers-including our more than 35 million Borders Rewards loyalty program members-high quality content on the device of their choosing,? said Borders Group Chief Executive Officer Ron Marshall. ?We look forward to bringing a world class eBook experience to Alex users.?

The Spring Design Alex runs on a Google Android operating system and will allow virtually any book store to run on its platform, provided that it adheres to the Alex E-Reader Format which are ePub, HTML, and TXT files. the Device has 2 Gigabytes of storage, enough of hundreds of books.

The above aforementioned operating system will allow users to download applications from the Alex Market, allowing the user to download books from other book stores. the Alex marketplace will allow users to also download applications that are custom made and approved for the E-Reader. the Alex allows you to browse the internet! You can surf the internet using just the bottom color screen or you can drag it and project it on the main display in E-Ink. Notification icons allow you to quickly assess your battery life, EMAILS, and other indicators such as Downloading and more! You can also download books to the Alex right from websites that offer downloads.

The Alex is a wonderful E-Reader and worth the extra money over the Barnes and Noble Nook which is very similar to this device. the Nook is too closed to our liking. despite the fact that it also has a Google Android Based operating system it does not have an established market place for users to download applications. If you live outside of the United States, you will not even be able to register your device properly unless you are in a free wireless hot zone. the Barnes and Noble nook is $259 while the Alex is $399, but for a 6 inch e-reader that does everything from reading books, to surfing the internet, to allowing the user to choice the best book store solution for their money, no 6 Inch E-Reader is poised to do so much, it?s a tremendous value for your money.

Asus 950

Asus is a long standing electronics company that cut its teeth with computer hard ware, such as Motherboards, and internal components. Asus now, releases everything from Netbooks, to Asus EEE Pad and now jumping into the E-Reader game. Asus is a highly respected company and many geeks swear by their computer hardware.

The Asus 950 features one single screen, but is a large heavy weight at 9 inches and features screen resolution of 1024?768 giving you one crystal clear image. the Asus 950 does not use E-INK like its rival for this match, it uses SiPix Microcup electronic paper, which purports to be more a more energy efficient, brighter picture and giving you the illusion of colors, such as reds, blues, greens and yellows.

The Asus 950 will offer RSS feeds, translation and text to speech. It?ll also pack 2 or 4GB of internal memory and an SD slot, Wi-Fi and HSDPA and a USB port for side loading, a 3.5m audio port for music. the Asus DR-950 will support PDF, TXT, Audible, MP3, ePub, HTML, JPEG, GIF, PNG and BMP file formats. It has formed a partnership with the Barnes and Noble Book Store for their content and books.

One of the most interesting facets of Asus jumping into the E-reader wars is that it is not using traditional E-INK they are using something named SiPix Microcup electronic paper, which purports to be more a more energy efficient alternative. the Asus E-Reader comes out in may and has a price tag of around $350.00. We dig the fact that the Asus will be one of the first adapters of color e-ink. Freescale the makers of most of the screen technology almost all E-Readers have, has developed a new technology to make E-Readers display full color e-ink, you probably will not see any by the end of the year, but if you are looking for the most Color for your buck, the Asus fills that need. the other factor we like, is because Asus has great relationships with computer stores all over the world, it would only be a small trip to your local computer ship to purchase one of these, making it easier then ordering it online and waiting weeks for it to arrive.

The Skiff

The Skiff E-Reader has a very generous display area, which stands at 11.5 inches with a resolution of 1200 x 1600 pixels. A stainless steel foil forms the base of the Skiff e-reader, which imparts a shatter-proof, crack-proof and a flexible characteristic to the device. Designed by LG display, it incorporates touch screen features that can accept both finger and stylus input. the e-reader measure 9 inches x 11 inches and its thickness is just a shade over 1/4 inch. And at just over 17 1/2 ounces, the Skiff e-reader is lighter than the Kindle DX, which tips the scale at 18.9 ounces.

The Skiff will feature both Wi-Fi connectivity as well as 3G via Sprint. It is equipped with an internal memory that has a capacity of 4GB while the SD-card slot means, there is room for still more.

About its main source of content, what we know right now is that it is going to be the Skiff Store, which will look after the entire spectrum of selling and distributing newspapers, magazines, books, blogs and other content from multiple publishers across a range of devices. It is also likely that the newspapers and periodicals that is to be distributed by Skiff will also feature advertising, something that is lacking in Amazon?s Kindle versions and which the publishers will surely like to have included. Kindle newspapers also miss out on most of the photos, graphs, and so on. Skiff e-reader scores in this area also as their versions will have most of the graphics of the actual paper editions.

We love the Skiff as a unique design, it looks like to be the top of the class in far of a huge screen with tremendous resolution. We also like the fact the entire screen is touch screen, which means unlike the Kindle and other E-Readers it does not have a ton of buttons. Skiff has formed a relationship with Sprint and Samsung which means most Sprint stores will have this in stock, making purchase and discounts on the unit with a long term 3G package may lower the price drastically for citizens of the USA. the Price and release date have not been disclosed but rumours abound of a July Release date with a price tag of around $500.00

Plastic Logic Que Pro-Reader

Plastic Logic took the veil off their newest business-oriented e-reader, the QUE proReader at the 7th CES held in January. as per the latest e-reader news coming in, the Que is slated to hit market sometime in April, though pre-orders are currently being accepted on the company site. Buyers who had pre-ordered the QUE have been informed by the company that the e-reader won?t be available until summer in an attempt to fine tune its features and improve the overall product experience.

Developed by scientists at Cambridge University?s Cavendish Laboratory, Plastic Logic uses flexible plastic technology that has been in development for 10 years now. the company plans to introduce two different models of the Plastic Logic Que E-Reader: one with a price tag of $649 and featuring Bluetooth, Wi-Fi capability and 4 GB memory and another priced at $799 having Wi-Fi, 3G wireless and 8GB memory. Both models don?t have memory card slots. QUE is slated to be sold through Barnes and Noble?s retail stores. Positioned as a paperless briefcase, Que is one of the largest e-readers in the market. Less than 1/3? thick, Que has a width of 8.5? and a length of 11? with a weight of 17.2 ounces. Screen measures 10.7? diagonally, with a display resolution of 960 x 1280 at 150 ppi. Strangely, it supports only 8 levels of greyscale in comparison to many of the newer e-book readers that support 16.

Apart from Plastic Logic affirming that the screen is shatterproof, a gesture-based captive touch screen is used for navigation with a virtual keyboard for taking notes. Plastic Logic has positioned the product for business professionals due to large screen and its support for Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and PDF functions.

It is quite similar to Kindle DX in that it allows you to read newspapers, periodicals, business documents, textbooks, and PDF files along with e-books and text files as well. AT&T will provide both 3G and Wi-Fi capabilities depending on the model you choose. And since AT&T also has a presence in other countries, there sure exists an opportunity for expansion, though for now, the device is going to be limited to within US shores only.

Many big Magazines and Retailers have signed partnership agreements with the Que such as USA TODAY, Wall Street Journal, the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Baltimore Sun, the San Jose Mercury News, the Contra Costa Times, the Detroit Free Press, the Detroit News, the Oakland Tribune, the Huffington Post, the Sporting News Today, along with magazines from Barron?s, Fast Company, Forbes, MIT?s Technology Review, popular Science, and IDG publication titles, including Macworld, PC World, CIO, Network World, and Computerworld.

The Que also reads a versatile amount of formats such as EPUB, PDF, HTML, Visio, RTF, DOC, DOCX, TXT, PPT, PPTX, XLS, XLSX.

This probably the most expensive of the new generation of e-readers coming out. but it remains at the top of the heap next to the Skiff as two of the most innovative and versatile electronic readers to debut this years. If you have a large pocket book, the Skiff may be the right choice for you.

Final Thoughts

2010 is going to be a great year for E-Readers. New ones to accommodate all budgets are going to become available by a fair number of well known and respected companies with a long standing track record of making quality products. on the flip side, there are also a slew of potentially wonderful devices coming out by new companies with less known reputation. E-Reader technology is accelerating quickly. If you have never had an E-Reader before, we suggest you pick one up. Entry level models such as the Sony 300 Pocket Edition is only $169.00 while the Kobo when released will only be $149.00. Personally, I am most excited about the Skiff and the Que E-Reader, but with the availability mostly in the USA, it will be harder for Canadian and UK Customers to purchase the higher end devices. towards the end of 2010 Freescale is releasing Coloured E-INK Technology which will allow traditional E-Ink to be full color without a increase in unit cost. the color technology is mass produced is actually most cost effective than the traditional black text on a grey background. If you can afford to wait until next year for full color, we recommend you do so. If you need something cheap and cheerful now, go with the Sony Pocket Book, the Kobo E-Reader or for a 9 Inch screen go with the Sony Daily Edition or any of the E-Readers we covered in this article as best value for your money for the long term.

Remember, you want an e-reader that will allow you to read the books not only on the device you have now, but on any future devices you get. Kohli fires India to vital win with 183

Virat Kohli smashed a career-best 183 to power India to a crucial six-wicket victory over Pakistan in the Asia Cup one-day tournament in Dhaka on Sunday.

The in-form batsman hit one six and 22 fours in his explosive 148-ball knock. It was his third century in four matches and helped India achieve the stiff 330-run target with 13 balls to spare.

The Indian innings marked their highest successful chase in one-dayers, surpassing 326 against England at Lord's in 2002.

Earlier, Pakistan's Nasir Jamshed hit a 104-ball 112 for his maiden one-day century and Mohammad Hafeez made a 113-ball 105 to help post a challenging total.

Pakistan made it to the final despite the defeat, finishing their league engagements with nine points from three games, while India (eight points from three games) and Bangladesh (four from two) are still in contention.

Bangladesh need to win their final league match against Sri Lanka on Tuesday to knock India out.

"Sachin (Tendulkar) and Virat batted brilliantly while Rohit (Sharma) can be a good finisher," said India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

The day-night match was the first between the two teams since the high-profile World Cup semi-final at Mohali last March, which India won on their way to clinching the showpiece title.

Kohli and opener Tendulkar put India on course for the remarkable victory with a 133-run stand for the second wicket after the second-ball dismissal of Gautam Gambhir.

Tendulkar, who became the first player to score 100 international centuries on Friday, looked in good form.

He hit a brisk 48-ball 52 with the help of one six and five fours before being caught by Younis Khan in the slips off spinner Saeed Ajmal.

Kohli, whose previous best was an unbeaten 133, received valuable support from Sharma who made an impressive 68 in a 172-run stand for the third wicket.

"I still can't believe what happened out there, honestly," said Kohli, who was named man of the match.

"I'm really satisfied. To be able to chase 330 against this bowling is satisfying."

Left-handed Jamshed and Hafeez had dominated the Indian bowling attack as they added 224 runs, Pakistan's best for the opening wicket against India in one-day internationals.

"It was an excellent innings by Kohli, the best I have ever seen," said Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq.

"Credit goes to their batsmen. It's easy out there under lights but 329 is still a good score."

Pakistan scored 73 in the last 10 overs, with Younis hitting a 34-ball 52 with the help of six fours before falling to a superb one-handed catch by Suresh Raina in the covers off paceman Praveen Kumar.

Shahid Afridi (nine) completed 7,000 one-day runs before being caught by Kohli off Irfan Pathan.

Hafeez was the first to complete his century, pushing Kumar to mid-off for a single. He struck one six and nine fours before being trapped leg-before by seamer Ashok Dinda.

Jamshed reached the century in Kumar's next over with a single and then hit the bowler for a six. He also cracked 10 fours.

India, who failed to defend 289 in their last match against Bangladesh on Friday, again put in a below-par performance with none of their bowlers able to keep pressure on the Pakistani openers.

World News - Live World War II bomb found, then neutralized in ...

BMPM via Reuters

An explosives expert works on a World War II bomb discovered on a building site in Marseille's harbor.

By msnbc.com staff

French officials evacuated 1,500 residents from their homes in Marseille, in the south of France, on Sunday after discovering a live bomb that was placed there by Germans during World War II, LaProvence.com reported. ?

The bomb was discovered by builders working on a retirement home construction site, The Riviera Times reported. The bomb, wrapped with a cable and pillows to absorb any potential shock, was gently lifted for fear that it might explode.

Neutralizing the bomb took 40 minutes. Deactivating the bomb was a delicate process, one that LaProvence.com detailed in a minute-by-minute account.

The massive bomb, which took up the better part of a moving truck, was transported Sunday afternoon to Canjuers military camp, where it will be destroyed, LaProvence.com reported.

Are We Too Concerned About Health And Safety In Schools? | All ...

A survey carried out by Play England and the British Toy and Hobby Association has revealed that almost 75% of parents believe that their children are overprotected by the Health and Safety rules in schools. While parents are grateful that safety is being taken seriously as an issue, they also feel that the abundance of rules hampers the capacity for ?boisterous play?, which was the staple of many of their own childhoods.

Knock-on Effects

In the survey it was found that, on average, each child gets around 37 minutes of time to play freely during the school day. Dr Amanda Gummer, a psychologist who works in tandem with the British Toy and Hobby Association, said that: ?Children are growing up without the opportunity to learn how to assess risks. Children have to have bumps and scrapes to teach them what?s safe and what?s not. Children who have all elements of danger removed from their lives grow up to think they are invincible. This doesn?t just affect the accidents they might have when riding a bike or exploring a river, but it has a knock-on effect in terms of drug culture and gang violence?.

Part of the problem seems to be that, with the number of personal Injury lawsuits levied against schools increasing over recent years, schools are now much more risk averse. They would rather manage their pupils? play to what the majority of parents see as an extreme, than risk being sued. Catherine Prisk, one-time teacher and current Associate Director of Play England observes that: ?A generation of teachers has been trained to prevent all forms of play-fighting in the playground. But rough and tumble play is vital for all children, particularly for boys, who learn social skills through free, physical play that they simply cannot learn in other ways?.

Finding the Middle ground

However, despite their misgivings that Health and Safety was becoming too intrusive, the majority of the 2,000 parents interviewed for the survey believed that their children?s safety should be a priority within schools. Is there a middle ground that serves both purposes? Headteacher, Faye Kitchen, believes there is.

In 2007, Faye introduced a new play scheme at Bromley Heath School in Gloucestershire. As part of a venture to reduce the amount of playground bullying that was taking place, Faye decided to change the rules where play was concerned. Her theory was that ?children need and want to take risks when they play.? The main rule change she approved was that children at her school were only allowed to hit each other with toys. While this may sound like the pendulum swinging in the other direction, the results were better than she could have hoped for. ?There were accidents at the beginning because the children were used to playtime being about speed and aggression but, once they got used to the fact that they had to take responsibility for their own safety, the accidents disappeared almost entirely?.

Since 2007, there have been more and more Government rules concerning the safety of children in school. While we all want our children to be safe, there is also an argument that it is sometimes best to let children be children.

Chris Hedges: Why the United States Is Destroying Its Education ...

A nation that destroys its systems of education, degrades its
public information, guts its public libraries and turns its airwaves
into vehicles for cheap, mindless amusement becomes deaf, dumb and
blind. It prizes test scores above critical thinking and literacy. It
celebrates rote vocational training and the singular, amoral skill of
making money. It churns out stunted human products, lacking the capacity
and vocabulary to challenge the assumptions and structures of the
corporate state. It funnels them into a caste system of drones and
systems managers. It transforms a democratic state into a feudal system
of corporate masters and serfs.
Teachers, their unions under attack, are becoming as replaceable as minimum-wage employees at Burger King. We spurn real teachers?those with the capacity to inspire children to think, those who help the young discover their gifts and potential?and replace them with instructors who teach to narrow, standardized tests. These instructors obey. They teach children to obey. And that is the point. The No Child Left Behind program, modeled on the ?Texas Miracle,? is a fraud. It worked no better than our deregulated financial system. But when you shut out debate these dead ideas are self-perpetuating.
Passing bubble tests celebrates and rewards a peculiar form of analytical intelligence. This kind of intelligence is prized by money managers and corporations. They don?t want employees to ask uncomfortable questions or examine existing structures and assumptions. They want them to serve the system. These tests produce men and women who are just literate and numerate enough to perform basic functions and service jobs. The tests elevate those with the financial means to prepare for them. They reward those who obey the rules, memorize the formulas and pay deference to authority. Rebels, artists, independent thinkers, eccentrics and iconoclasts?those who march to the beat of their own drum?are weeded out.
?Imagine,? said a public school teacher in New York City, who asked that I not use his name, ?going to work each day knowing a great deal of what you are doing is fraudulent, knowing in no way are you preparing your students for life in an ever more brutal world, knowing that if you don?t continue along your scripted test prep course and indeed get better at it you will be out of a job. Up until very recently, the principal of a school was something like the conductor of an orchestra: a person who had deep experience and knowledge of the part and place of every member and every instrument. In the past 10 years we?ve had the emergence of both [Mayor] Mike Bloomberg?s Leadership Academy and Eli Broad?s Superintendents Academy, both created exclusively to produce instant principals and superintendents who model themselves after CEOs. How is this kind of thing even legal? How are such ?academies? accredited? What quality of leader needs a ?leadership academy?? What kind of society would allow such people to run their children?s schools? The high-stakes tests may be worthless as pedagogy but they are a brilliant mechanism for undermining the school systems, instilling fear and creating a rationale for corporate takeover. There is something grotesque about the fact the education reform is being led not by educators but by financers and speculators and billionaires.?
Teachers, under assault from every direction, are fleeing the profession. Even before the ?reform? blitzkrieg we were losing half of all teachers within five years after they started work?and these were people who spent years in school and many thousands of dollars to become teachers. How does the country expect to retain dignified, trained professionals under the hostility of current conditions? I suspect that the hedge fund managers behind our charter schools system?whose primary concern is certainly not with education?are delighted to replace real teachers with nonunionized, poorly trained instructors. To truly teach is to instill the values and knowledge which promote the common good and protect a society from the folly of historical amnesia. The utilitarian, corporate ideology embraced by the system of standardized tests and leadership academies has no time for the nuances and moral ambiguities inherent in a liberal arts education. Corporatism is about the cult of the self. It is about personal enrichment and profit as the sole aim of human existence. And those who do not conform are pushed aside.
?It is extremely dispiriting to realize that you are in effect lying to these kids by insinuating that this diet of corporate reading programs and standardized tests are preparing them for anything,? said this teacher, who feared he would suffer reprisals from school administrators if they knew he was speaking out. ?It is even more dispiriting to know that your livelihood depends increasingly on maintaining this lie. You have to ask yourself why are hedge fund managers suddenly so interested in the education of the urban poor? The main purpose of the testing craze is not to grade the students but to grade the teacher.?
?I cannot say for certain?not with the certainty of a Bill Gates or a Mike Bloomberg who pontificate with utter certainty over a field in which they know absolutely nothing?but more and more I suspect that a major goal of the reform campaign is to make the work of a teacher so degrading and insulting that the dignified and the truly educated teachers will simply leave while they still retain a modicum of self-respect,? he added. ?In less than a decade we been stripped of autonomy and are increasingly micromanaged. Students have been given the power to fire us by failing their tests. Teachers have been likened to pigs at a trough and blamed for the economic collapse of the United States. In New York, principals have been given every incentive, both financial and in terms of control, to replace experienced teachers with 22-year-old untenured rookies. They cost less. They know nothing. They are malleable and they are vulnerable to termination.?
The demonizing of teachers is another public relations feint, a way for corporations to deflect attention from the theft of some $17 billion in wages, savings and earnings among American workers and a landscape where one in six workers is without employment. The speculators on Wall Street looted the U.S. Treasury. They stymied any kind of regulation. They have avoided criminal charges. They are stripping basic social services. And now they are demanding to run our schools and universities.
?Not only have the reformers removed poverty as a factor, they?ve removed students? aptitude and motivation as factors,? said this teacher, who is in a teachers union. ?They seem to believe that students are something like plants where you just add water and place them in the sun of your teaching and everything blooms. This is a fantasy that insults both student and teacher. The reformers have come up with a variety of insidious schemes pushed as steps to professionalize the profession of teaching. As they are all businessmen who know nothing of the field, it goes without saying that you do not do this by giving teachers autonomy and respect. They use merit pay in which teachers whose students do well on bubble tests will receive more money and teachers whose students do not do so well on bubble tests will receive less money. Of course, the only way this could conceivably be fair is to have an identical group of students in each class?an impossibility. The real purposes of merit pay are to divide teachers against themselves as they scramble for the brighter and more motivated students and to further institutionalize the idiot notion of standardized tests. There is a certain diabolical intelligence at work in both of these.?
?If the Bloomberg administration can be said to have succeeded in anything,? he said, ?they have succeeded in turning schools into stress factories where teachers are running around wondering if it?s possible to please their principals and if their school will be open a year from now, if their union will still be there to offer some kind of protection, if they will still have jobs next year. This is not how you run a school system. It?s how you destroy one. The reformers and their friends in the media have created a Manichean world of bad teachers and effective teachers. In this alternative universe there are no other factors. Or, all other factors?poverty, depraved parents, mental illness and malnutrition?are all excuses of the Bad Teacher that can be overcome by hard work and the Effective Teacher.?
The truly educated become conscious. They become self-aware. They do not lie to themselves. They do not pretend that fraud is moral or that corporate greed is good. They do not claim that the demands of the marketplace can morally justify the hunger of children or denial of medical care to the sick. They do not throw 6 million families from their homes as the cost of doing business. Thought is a dialogue with one?s inner self. Those who think ask questions, questions those in authority do not want asked. They remember who we are, where we come from and where we should go. They remain eternally skeptical and distrustful of power. And they know that this moral independence is the only protection from the radical evil that results from collective unconsciousness. The capacity to think is the only bulwark against any centralized authority that seeks to impose mindless obedience. There is a huge difference, as Socrates understood, between teaching people what to think and teaching them how to think. Those who are endowed with a moral conscience refuse to commit crimes, even those sanctioned by the corporate state, because they do not in the end want to live with criminals?themselves.
?It is better to be at odds with the whole world than, being one, to be at odds with myself,? Socrates said.
Those who can ask the right questions are armed with the capacity to make a moral choice, to defend the good in the face of outside pressure. And this is why the philosopher Immanuel Kant puts the duties we have to ourselves before the duties we have to others. The standard for Kant is not the biblical idea of self-love?love thy neighbor as thyself, do unto others as you would have them do unto you?but self-respect. What brings us meaning and worth as human beings is our ability to stand up and pit ourselves against injustice and the vast, moral indifference of the universe. Once justice perishes, as Kant knew, life loses all meaning. Those who meekly obey laws and rules imposed from the outside?including religious laws?are not moral human beings. The fulfillment of an imposed law is morally neutral. The truly educated make their own wills serve the higher call of justice, empathy and reason. Socrates made the same argument when he said it is better to suffer wrong than to do wrong.
?The greatest evil perpetrated,? Hannah Arendt wrote, ?is the evil committed by nobodies, that is, by human beings who refuse to be persons.?
As Arendt pointed out, we must trust only those who have this self-awareness. This self-awareness comes only through consciousness. It comes with the ability to look at a crime being committed and say ?I can?t.? We must fear, Arendt warned, those whose moral system is built around the flimsy structure of blind obedience. We must fear those who cannot think. Unconscious civilizations become totalitarian wastelands.
?The greatest evildoers are those who don?t remember because they have never given thought to the matter, and, without remembrance, nothing can hold them back,? Arendt writes. ?For human beings, thinking of past matters means moving in the dimension of depth, striking roots and thus stabilizing themselves, so as not to be swept away by whatever may occur?the Zeitgeist or History or simple temptation. The greatest evil is not radical, it has no roots, and because it has no roots it has no limitations, it can go to unthinkable extremes and sweep over the whole world.?

Republicans heap blame on Obama for Afghan crisis

A crisis in Washington's relations with Afghan President Hamid Karzai sparked attacks Sunday on President Barack Obama, as Republican presidential candidates heaped blame on him for the troubles in the US exit strategy.

Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney and former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum assailed the president on separate television talks shows as creating an untenable situation by setting a hard-and-fast 2014 timetable for a US withdrawal.

"If the game plan is we're leaving irrespective of whether we're going to succeed or not, then why are we still there?" asked Santorum on ABC's "This Week." "Let's either commit to winning, or let's get out."

The attacks from the right came as the administration was struggling to contain the fallout from a massacre of 16 villagers, many of them women and children, by a US soldier who allegedly went on a rampage March 11 in southern Afghanistan.

The White House said Obama and the Afghan leader reaffirmed their commitment to the 2014 withdrawal plan in a phone call Friday.

But Karzai's warning that he was "at the end of the rope" and public demands for an earlier pullback of US troops to their bases underscored the yawning divide between the allies at a time of sharply declining public support for the 10-year-old war in the United States.

Republicans seized on the issue to accuse Obama of failing to heed his commanders demands for more troops, for withdrawing a surge force too soon and failing to demonstrate US commitment to a successful outcome.

"I think it is plain to see that the conditions there are not going very well," said Romney on Fox News Sunday. "And I lay part of the blame for that on the lack of leadership on the part of our president, both in terms of his interactions with Karzai and with leaders there as well as his relative detachment from our military commanders there."

"This does have the indications of a similarly failed withdrawal or a failed completion effort on the part of this president, just like we saw in Iraq. He likewise failed in the way we left Iraq," he said.

But neither he nor Santorum, who are vying to run against Obama in November, were clear about what they would do if they were in the president's place.

Santorum said he agreed in some respects with former House speaker Newt Gingrich, a rival for the Republican nomination who said last week it was likely the US mission in Afghanistan was "not doable."

Romney said the current timetable should remain in effect "unless of course there are changes in conditions that suggest a faster withdrawal."

Advocates of an extended US presence in Afghanistan, meanwhile, argued that the decline in US public support for the war reflected a loss of confidence in the US strategy.

"Do we know what we are doing when these incidents happen and President Karzai makes the statements that he has done," said Zalmay Khalilzad, a former US ambassador to Kabul under president George W. Bush, on CNN.

"It raises questions in the minds of people, do we know what we are doing? Are we succeeding?"

Senator John McCain, a staunch proponent of a large and continuing US military presence in Afghanistan, disputed the perception that the mission was failing, insisting that the relationship between US troops and Afghanistan "is wonderful."

If Obama does not accelerate the withdrawal of US forces, he said, "we can withdraw with a stable government in Afghanistan."

He acknowledged, however, that the massacre of civilians "really sets back everything a great deal."

The New iPad Review - Simply Amazing - Creativity And Innovation ...

I went to the Apple Store in Irvine Spectrum to check out the New iPad... Here are my observations (I own the original iPad, and have used the iPad 2 which I bought for my father):

1. I love the display... This is indeed the most beautiful display.? I checked out several high resolution photographs, and zoomed in several times to see whether the tiniest of details can be seen without getting pixelated. The New iPad portrays images with incredible depth. If you want to browse, preview or interact with high-res photos, art, images and more, the New iPad is the best tablet out there.

2. I love the camera... I captured some photos and also shot some videos.? The photos are looking way better than the iPad 2 and even better than my iPhone 4. The videos are shot in HD, and look great also. Only thing I disliked are the two black bands on the top and the bottom as you are playing back the video (this happens because of the aspect ratio I am assuming; however, Apple could have defaulted to playback the video in full screen). Frankly, if you love taking photos and videos of your family, outdoors, and just about anything, this is a great reason to buy the New iPad.?

3. I love the performance... The New iPad is super fast, compared to the iPad and iPad 2. I would like to compare results from the speed test, but I could see that the apps load faster, perform better, and appear great owing to the high resolution. I downloaded the latest interactive iBook on Earth, and the experience of reading it and interacting with it was fast and awesome!

4. I love the apps... especially the ones that can now help you create and work with content, edit photos and videos, and even music i.e. iMovie, iPhoto, GarageBand. The productivity apps also performed well including Pages, Keynote and Numbers. Can the New iPad finally become a content creation device, and not just content viewing? This could be the clincher for Apple.

5. I love the connectivity... The 4G LTE and built in cellular antennas make this New iPad a Global iPad. The promise of being able to connect to any network in the world, whether its 4G or 3G, and on various technologies makes this iPad a blessing for world travelers. And the icing on the cake: You can use your iPad as a personal hotspot! So now you can connect your other devices over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or USB, and use the Internet at will.

There is a lot to love in the New iPad. The big question is whether to upgrade or not from your existing iPads? If you can find a buyer for your old iPad or can give it to a family member or friend (or even donate it to a school), by all means do that!! This New iPad is the most amazing iPad yet!!

Apple's New iPad is one of its best innovations, both for education and business, and is poised to expand the creativity and innovation among students and adults alike. It is quite possibly the funnest gadget!
