The hurricane Sandy business interruption conundrum | www - Artemis

The issue of business interruption and contingent business interruption insurance losses is becoming a major conundrum when it comes to estimating the total insured loss caused by hurricane and post-tropical storm Sandy. Business interruption claims can take weeks to develop, longer to be reported and quantifying the actual exposure is tricky. Add to that uncertainty around whether insurance policies include business interruption and the insurance and reinsurance industry has a job on its hands.

Reports that came out yesterday and today from various market observers suggest that business interruption will be a real issue from Sandy. The problem with business interruption is that there are so many unknowns that the claims total from BI can very quickly escalate. How business interruption is written into insurance policies is a factor, as some may exclude BI resulting from a government induced shutdown of New York, some insurers policies may exclude BI unless it is contingent on actual damages from an event. Flood applicability to BI claims is also a potential contractual issue in insurance policies. Contract technicalities can make a big difference to BI claims, so expect there to be disputes and much uncertainty over the level of business interruption losses from Sandy.

Dan Gerber, from law firm Goldberg Segalla, commented; ?Sandy will likely cause significant business-interruption losses. The key issue will be determining applicable coverage for these claims and appropriate restoration periods. Two key issues insurers will be looking at are causation and calculation of damages. They will examine whether the damage resulted from flood, often an excluded loss, or wind and wind-driven-rain. Additional coverage may be implicated if a sewer backup of some sort occurred during flooding.?

?In the aftermath of Sandy, a number of complicated issues will arise when insurance companies assess the level of pay-out they are facing on business interruption claims. These include: is the lost income claimed based on historical figures or figures in the post-damage community; and did the market circumstances change after the disaster that would have rendered the business more valuable and profitable if it had been open??

?When assessing loss of profits for a business, it is vitally important that accurate calculations are made, so a forensic accountant should be engaged at an early stage to work through the problem and analyze the expenses as they are being incurred.?

?Business interruption insurance requires a suspension or interruption to the insured?s business to trigger coverage, and most courts have ruled that the cessation of business must be total, not merely a slowdown or decrease in expected profit, unless the policy specifically provides otherwise.?

?Ultimately, businesses want their claims adjusted timely and accurately, and insurers will want complete information from insureds. To achieve this, it is important that appropriate financial models are in place, that claimed losses are carefully documented, and that claims are carefully investigated to ensure they are covered by the policies in place.?

Fitch Ratings said in a release late yesterday that business interruption from Sandy could cause big losses for the insurance industry. Fitch expects that flooding from excessive rainfall and high storm surge will be a substantial component of damages from Sandy, in addition to damage from the storms strong winds. They stress that it is important to note that homeowners? policies cover wind losses, but generally do not cover flood losses. Conversely, many commercial policies cover both wind and flood losses, as do crop insurance policies. This complication can add to the delay in calculating an overall industry loss for the event.

Fitch said that there is the potential for significant business interruption (BI) and contingent business interruption (CBI) losses related to the flooding as the affected areas work to restore power and resume operations following the storm. Sandy has impacted a wide variety of businesses in densely populated areas, including retail, corporate offices, transportation, manufacturing, and energy plants, many of which will have BI policies or clauses in their policies and now good reason to claim on them.

Fitch ratings explain:

Extensive BI and CBI losses were experienced by the insurance industry last year in both the Japanese earthquake and tsunami and Thailand floods, as they accounted for a considerable portion of commercial and industrial losses. Fitch also notes that these events demonstrated the extent to which BI and CBI losses have been underestimated in the modeling and underwriting of risks.

In order to incur a BI or CBI loss, an insured must suffer an actual loss of income from the suspension of operations. In the case of BI, the interruption must be due to physical loss or damage to its own property as a result of a covered cause of loss. A BI claim can also be triggered if the work location is not accessible due to a ?civil authority? order telling people to stay out of an area. CBI provides an additional protection that covers loss of income when the insured?s operations are disrupted by a supplier and covers the same perils as the main policy of the insured. However, the majority of companies do not purchase CBI policies.

Coverage typically begins following a waiting period, most often 72 hours, and continues for the length of time it takes to repair, rebuild, or replace the damaged or destroyed property with reasonable speed and similar quality. Thus, the ultimate insured losses from BI and CBI will be partly predicated on the speed with which businesses resume operations. It is also important to note that the vast majority of BI and CBI coverage purchased in the U.S. is included as part of the insured?s property policy, and are thus included within the overall property policy?s coverage limits.

Alex Denslow, a partner at law firm CMS Cameron McKenna agrees and is quoted in the Post Magazine here saying that insurers may struggle to define causes of damage, which could confuse BI claims. ?Damage has been caused as a consequence of wind, water, snow, fire, inland flooding and storm surge. Insurers will need to check policy coverage carefully to determine the scope of cover,? he said. ?As in the case of the New Zealand earthquakes, there may be practical difficulties for adjusters in determining the cause of loss due to inability to access areas that may be affected.?

Also in their regular legal update emails CMS Cameron McKenna said; ?Insurers will need to consider whether their policies cover business interruption as a consequence of government action or as a preventative measure, or whether business interruption is contingent on material damage.? They mention the tourism industry as a prime example of one hit by Sandy and facing business interruption issues.

Reinsurance payouts could increase due to these business interruption claims as some will likely trickle through to be dealt with by reinsurers, although again contract wording will matter and disputes are possible. For catastrophe bonds, generally business interruption and contingent business interruption are included as part of an ultimate net loss or industry loss total so many have some exposure to this. It does raise into question how qualifying losses are calculated for cat bonds given the length of time it can take for interruption claims to fully develop. Hence the calculation methodology documentation is so important in cat bond, and ILW, transactions as it defines how long the gap between event and calculation report can be.

So, business interruption is likely to prove a conundrum for insurers, reinsurers and anyone assessing the extent of the insured loss from Sandy. Loss development could go on for some time, similar to that seen in Thailand and New Zealand where loss estimates rose months after the events. It?s important that the industry continues to look at ways to better understand business interruption and tries to develop new tools to hedge this risk explicitly as that would help to avoid any confusion caused by policy wording.

Romney Makes Last-Ditch Play For Pennsylvania

It's a tradition for Republican presidential candidates to pour money into Pennsylvania with little to show for it -- the state hasn't picked a Republican for the office in 24 years. But a week before the election, the Romney campaign says it is making a serious play for the Keystone State.

In a memo released Tuesday, campaign manager Rich Beeson argued that Pennsylvania is a "unique opportunity" for Romney. And the campaign seems to be putting its money where its mouth is, placing statewide ad buys that should begin airing on television Wednesday, according to the Associated Press.

"The western part of the Keystone State has become more conservative (and President Obama's war on coal is very unpopular there), and Mitt Romney is more competitive in the voter-rich Philadelphia suburbs than any Republican nominee since 1988," the memo states. "This makes Pennsylvania a natural next step as we expand the playing field."

Recent polls show that the Romney campaign may be on to something. Romney began to gain on President Obama in September and that continued in October after his strong performance in the first debate. The TPM PollTracker Average has Obama leading Romney by just three points.

Since Romney's post-debate bounce, the campaign has claimed that the momentum in the race remains with the former governor, a strategy that the Pennsylvania ad buys fits into as well. But the Obama campaign called Romney's proclaimed efforts to expand the map a bluff.

"The Romney campaign wants you to think it's expanding the map, but it's not," Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said on a conference call with reporters Monday, after news that a super PAC supporting Romney was running ads in Minnesota and Pennsylvania. "They tried this before: a month ago they were going to surge in Michigan, then they weren't. A couple of weeks ago too they were going to surge in Maine...then they weren't."

Nevertheless, the Obama campaign will also begin running ads in the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh markets in a response to the super PAC. On Monday, the campaign said it would do this out of an abundance of caution.

If a last-ditch Republican effort to win Pennsylvania sounds familiar, that's because Sen. John McCain did it in 2008. Two weeks before that election, McCain's political director held a conference call with reporters in which he argued McCain had a good shot at winning the state even though polls at the time generally showed McCain trailing Obama by 10 to 15 points. Ultimately, Obama won the state by 10 points.

Though 2012 is not 2008, this is the scenario the Obama campaign recalled in their response to Romney's Pennsylvania effort.

"Three things are now absolutely clear in this race - we have a significant early vote advantage in states from North Carolina to Nevada, there is no Romney momentum in the battleground states, and the Romney campaign has found itself with a tremendously narrow and improbable path to 270 electoral votes," Messina said in a statement Tuesday, responding to new Romney ad buys. "Now, like Republicans did in 2008, they are throwing money at states where they never built an organization and have been losing for two years."

Romney's first ad in Pennsylvania touts his commitment to the coal industry -- and arguing that the state's coal industry has suffered under Obama:

Honda cuts FY profit forecast as China backlash hits

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's Honda Motor Co cut its full-year net profit forecast by a fifth after sales in China, the world's biggest autos market, were hit by a popular backlash against Japanese products in a dispute over East China Sea islands.

The substantial cut makes it likely that rivals Toyota Motor and Nissan Motor will follow suit when they report quarterly earnings early next week.

"It's likely Toyota and Nissan are going to cut forecasts in the same way. A cut was to be expected because the problems with China weren't factored into forecasts," said Fujio Ando, managing director at Chibagin Asset Management.

Demand for Honda, Toyota and Nissan cars slumped in China amid violent protests in September over the territorial dispute, with South Korea's Hyundai Motor and Germany's BMW picking up market share.

Sales by Honda and its China joint ventures dropped 40.5 percent last month. China is Honda's second-biggest market after the United States, accounting for 17 percent of 2011 sales.

Honda, whose models include the Accord, Fit/Jazz, Civic and CR/V, cut its net profit forecast for the year to March to 375 billion yen ($4.7 billion) from its earlier estimate of 470 billion yen. Last year, Honda reported net profit of 211.4 billion yen.

Shares in Honda - which fell 15 percent to near 9-month lows amid the China protests - dropped nearly 6 percent on Monday, trading at 2,383 yen early in the afternoon session.

Honda released its quarterly earnings three hours earlier than planned, after accidentally posting the results on its website. It quickly took down the numbers, but was told by the Tokyo Stock Exchange to bring forward the full announcement.

Net profit for July-September rose 36.1 percent to 82.2 billion yen ($1.03 billion), some way below the average estimate of 107.2 billion yen from six analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. A year ago, Japanese manufacturers were still reeling from the March earthquake and tsunami.

Honda's quarterly profits were also dented by start-up and advertising costs for the new Accord sedan, which went on sale in the United States in September, but the refresh helped Japan's third-biggest automaker increase its share of the U.S. car and light truck market to 8.7 percent in September.

The fallout from the Japan/China dispute could run into the current and fourth quarters, analysts have warned.

CEO Takanobu Ito, 59, a former aerospace engineer who took over three years ago, has set a demanding goal to nearly double global car sales to 6 million in four years. Worldwide production jumped 69 percent in April-September to above 2 million vehicles, but the carmaker on Monday scrapped its full-year global sales forecast of 4.3 million vehicles amid the uncertainties in the Chinese market.

Toyota and Nissan report their quarterly earnings on November 5 and November 6, respectively.

Golden solution to inexpensive test for HIV

Gold usually means extravagance, but now it could be the key to making vital medical tests cheaper.

People in poor countries often do not get timely treatment for cancer or infections, because diagnostic tests that can spot diseases early are too expensive. Now, a team at Imperial College London have figured out that gold could be the solution.

One common type of diagnostic test is the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). It uses a tiny dish coated with antibodies that bind to a target molecule from a germ or tumour cell present in blood serum. A second lot of antibodies are then added that attach themselves to the bound targets. These antibodies carry an enzyme that can be made to change colour by adding a chemical. The colour change is measured by machine to determine the presence and concentration of the germ or tumour cells. Unfortunately, the machines are expensive.

Molly Stevens and her colleagues have done away with the need for machines by devising a "plasmonic ELISA" ? a test which gives results readable with the naked eye. What's more, it is more sensitive than the best tests for HIV currently available.

Clumps versus spheres

The new test capitalises on the ability of hydrogen peroxide to react with dissolved gold ions, making them come out of solution and form metallic nanoparticles. How fast this reaction takes place, Stevens says, determines what kind of nanoparticles form. Less peroxide means they grow slowly, forming irregular clumps, while more peroxide favours the fast growth of spherical nanoparticles.

Crucially, due to the way that the nanoparticles interact with light, via a cloud of surface electrons called a plasmon, irregular clumps turn the solution blue, while spheres turn it red. And the colour is intense: gold particles were used to colour medieval stained glass.

In the plasmonic ELISA, the second set of antibodies carries an enzyme called catalase, which breaks down hydrogen peroxide. Both sets of antibodies are exposed to blood serum, then the dish is rinsed and peroxide is added, followed by gold ions.

If the target molecule is present, the second set of antibodies binds to it, allowing catalase to destroy peroxide. This in turn means the gold nanoparticles grow slowly, forming clumps that turn the dish visibly blue. If there is no protein, the antibodies do not bind and are rinsed out. Without the bound catalase, peroxide remains abundant, producing a fast reaction that turns the dish red.

This shows whether the protein is present, not how much there is ? but that is enough for most diagnoses. Only a small number of target molecules are needed to turn the dish blue.

Using antibodies that bind to a target molecule from HIV, or to one from prostate cancer, the team could detect attograms ? billionths of a billionth of a gram ? of the protein per millilitre of human serum. The test picked up HIV at levels too low to detect with DNA-based PCR tests ? ironically, considered the gold standard of HIV testing.

Magic Article RewriterClick Image To Visit SiteHowever, one of the easiest, proven, most time-tested ways to attract new business and more traffic to your site is to become a sought after authority and gain expert status in your field.

One of the biggest secrets that the top marketers don?t talk a lot about is the fact that they ALL have built their credibility, visibility, and their lists of gold by writing articles.

"This is a tried-and-true method that will NEVER stop working, unlike the latest and greatest gimmicks to spoof the search engines. (Try one of those and see how quickly your traffic halts once the bottom drops out.) Search engines love real content and will always love real content."

As thousands of Internet Marketers already know, backlinks from articles offer the surest route to high rankings in Google, tons of free traffic and lots of targeted customers.

"I wanted to create more passive income, I decided to give article marketing a REAL try. I decided to submit one article to 25 top-rated directories for 30 days straight. Only a week into it, my Google Adsense income has quintupled (increased 5 times) and my subscriber rate has increased three fold. And this is after ONE WEEK."

Writing effective articles and submitting them to popular article directories is the first step. But you also need to know the ?Dark Side?:

You take another 3 ? 4 hours to submit it to 100?s of article directories or blogs. Each site gives you a rank-boosting backlink.

Some unscrupulous marketers deliberately duplicate content across domains in an attempt to manipulate search engine rankings or win more traffic. Deceptive practices like this can result in a poor user experience, when a visitor sees substantially the same content repeated within a set of search results.

The ranking of the site may suffer, or the site might be removed entirely from the Google index, in which case it will no longer appear in search results.

Most people rewrite their articles by hand. Selecting sentence after sentence and reworking the content. As you can imagine it takes them hours and hours.

But you aren?t like most people, are you? You know deep down in your heart that there has to be a better way. I knew it, too. I used software that was supposed to ?spin? my articles.

I knew I could do it better. After many long hours locked in my office, I finally figured it out. How to rewrite text easily and quickly, that looked and read like it was professionally done.

With Magic Article Rewriter, you can save hours of tedious drudgery rewriting articles for posting to article directories. And best of all? It is so easy to use!

Crucial pre-election payroll report looks weak

(Reuters) - The last employment report before the U.S. presidential election is likely to have something for everyone - for those bullish and bearish on the economy and for Barack Obama and Mitt Romney.

Non-farm payrolls in October are forecast to have risen 124,000, barely more than September's 114,000 gain, according to 78 economists polled by Reuters. The unemployment rate probably edged back up to 7.9 percent after falling to 7.8 percent from 8.1 percent last month. The figures are due on Friday.

On the face of it, that would reinforce the charge leveled by Romney, a Republican, that the policies of his Democratic opponent are to blame for the slowest post-recession recovery since the war.

The proportion of America's working-age population that is employed has fallen to 58.7 percent from 60.6 percent when the Democrat took office in January 2009.

But Obama can counter that nearly 800,000 more Americans are in work today than when he became president and that five million jobs have been created since the December 2009 trough, according to the Bureau for Labor Statistics.

In many respects, the job statistics are likely to paint the same blurred picture as Friday's report showing the economy expanded at a 2.0 percent rate in the third quarter: things are improving, but at a frustratingly slow pace.

"For this reason the labor market is currently neither weak enough to do serious damage to Obama's re-election chances nor strong enough to give him a boost," said Bernd Weidensteiner, an economist with Commerzbank in Frankfurt.

Opinion polls show the November 6 election is too close to call.

FISCAL CLIFF

Douglas Roberts, an economist with Standard Life Investments in Edinburgh, said a weaker-than-expected jobs report would not make him too concerned about the U.S. economy. Housing in particular was rebounding smartly, albeit from a low base.

But any softness would underline the urgency of eliminating policy uncertainty that is causing businessmen to sit on their hands, not least the prospect of tax increases and spending cuts that will kick in next year in the absence of a long-term agreement to cut America's budget deficit.

"Investment and recruitment are being held back until companies have a much better idea of the economic environment they're going to be looking at after the election and the ?fiscal cliff' negotiations are through," Roberts said. "So I don't think the payroll numbers will tell you an awful lot."

The other data highlight of the week is the monthly survey by the Institute for Supply Management, which is closely watched in Asia as a pointer to export and production trends.

Economists polled by Reuters expect the ISM index to be unchanged at 51.5.

David Lubin at Citigroup said there was a "decent relationship" between the ISM survey and the export orders component of China's official purchasing managers' index, which is expected to creep higher. Both reports are due on Thursday.

Signs of stabilization in recent Chinese data, including credit growth and rising imports, were a cause for qualified optimism about the prospects in some other Asian economies, Lubin said in a report.

"But there is no systematic evidence that the revival in Chinese import demand is generating positive spillovers in a large number of countries," he added.

BANK OF JAPAN TO STEP UP

That is definitely the case in Japan, whose firms have scaled back sales, output and investment in China after the recent flare-up of a territorial dispute over islets in the East China sea led to violent protests across China and a partial boycott of Japanese goods.

With the economy also on the ropes because of the strong yen, the Bank of Japan is widely expected to deliver more monetary stimulus when it meets on Tuesday to prevent the world's third-largest economy from relapsing into recession.

Recession already has a firm grip on swathes of the euro zone, hit by a debt and banking crisis that is being exacerbated by austerity measures to reduce yawning budget deficits.

Data on Wednesday will probably show that the unemployment rate for the 17 countries using the single currency rose to a record high of 11.5 percent in September from 11.4 percent in August.

In Spain, which on Friday reported a jobless rate of 25 percent, the economy is likely to have shrunk by 0.4 percent in the third quarter, just as it did in the second quarter. Madrid releases the report on Tuesday.

Trans fats raise cholesterol, not blood sugar: study

(Reuters) - Although much-criticized trans fats raise levels of "bad" cholesterol, they don't appear to have a lasting impact on blood sugar levels, according to a U.S. study.

Researchers, writing in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that both blood sugar and insulin, the hormone that keeps blood sugar levels in check, were similar regardless of how much trans fat people ate.

The link between trans fats and high cholesterol levels is widely accepted, but there has been a lack of clarity on the effect on blood sugar control, which is involved in diabetes.

"Although evidence from cohort studies has suggested that trans fatty acid (TFA) consumption may be associated with insulin resistance and diabetes, randomized placebo-controlled trials have yielded conflicting results," wrote lead researcher Christos Mantzoros of Harvard Medical School in Boston.

Trans fats, technically known as trans fatty acids, are found in animal products and chemically processed vegetable oils. In response to studies linking high consumption of the substances to an increased risk of heart disease, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has required food makes to disclose trans fats on nutrition labels.

Some cities and states have banned them in restaurants or schools.

Montzoros and his colleagues pooled the results from seven experiments, including 208 people.

In five of the studies, the participants' blood sugar, insulin and cholesterol levels were monitored for several weeks under a diet of high trans fat consumption, and again for a few weeks when the trans fats were substituted for other fats, such as palm or soybean oil.

Two of the studies compared people who ate a diet that included trans fats to others who ate a diet without trans fats.

There were no changes in blood sugar or insulin levels during the times when people ate trans fats, compared to when they ate the other fats," Mantzoros's group reported.

However, the researchers found that during the trans fat-eating weeks, "good" HDL cholesterol went down and "bad" LDL cholesterol went up.

"They saw what you would expect to see" regarding cholesterol, which shows that the studies were well done, said Mark Pereira, an expert in public health and nutrition at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

Pereira, who was not involved in the study, said it isn't definitive proof that trans fats can't influence blood sugar levels.

Although several weeks is enough time to see an effect on cholesterol, he said, a potential impact on metabolism might not show up until later.

"If you're going to control weight and switch around fats in the diet, it might take a lot longer, because these fatty acids are being gradually incorporated over time into tissues in the body," he added.

But even if trans fats do have an impact on blood sugar control, Pereira said, it's becoming a moot point as the amount of trans fats people eat in the United States has diminished considerably.

A Hurricane Once More, Sandy Defies The Rules

It's still unclear whether Sandy will be a devastating storm or just a bad one.

It is clear, however, that Sandy will be remembered as the storm that broke all the rules and baffled the nation's top weather forecasters.

Early Saturday morning, the National Weather Service downgraded the storm from a hurricane to a tropical storm ? only to return it to hurricane status a few hours later. Either way, forecasters warn, "widespread impacts" are expected along the coast.

Three days before reaching land ? a time when the National Hurricane Center usually puts a bull's-eye on a small stretch of coast ? government forecasters were still talking about the possibility of the storm striking anywhere from Maryland to New York.

Their uncertainty was especially surprising because hurricane track forecasts have become so good in the past couple of decades. They are usually accurate five or more days out.

Yet during a press conference on Friday, James Franklin of the NHC was still deflecting reporters' questions about Sandy's track. "We cannot be precise at this stage about exactly where it will come in," he said.

Forecasters say Sandy just isn't like other hurricanes.

"The whole thing is unprecedented," Henry Margusity of AccuWeather told NPR's Melissa Block. "We've never seen anything like this."

For one thing, Sandy is about to start moving the opposite direction from a typical storm system.

Tropical storms in the Atlantic usually make a right turn and head out to sea as they travel north up the coast. But Sandy is expected to turn left and head straight inland.

That's because the storm is expected to encounter a highly unusual weather pattern. This pattern "blocks the system from going north and east and forces it to go more westward," said Louis Uccellini of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Another odd thing about Sandy is that it is expected to get slightly stronger as it moves north. Usually, hurricanes weaken as they reach cooler waters.

The reason for this strengthening is that Sandy is about to undergo a strange metamorphosis, forecasters say. Shortly before it reaches land, it will begin to encounter cold air from the north, and this cold air will change Sandy to something more like a winter storm.

As a practical matter, this means that instead of drawing its power primarily from warm ocean water the way a hurricane usually does, Sandy will be powered by pressure and temperature differences in the atmosphere, Uccellini says. So it can pick up strength when most storms would be weakening.

Becoming a winter-type storm also means Sandy won't have the usual structure of a hurricane, with a clearly defined eye. Instead it will be an enormous swirling mass of wind and rain, and even snow.

Of course Sandy isn't the first late-season storm to behave oddly. In 1991, right around Halloween, a hurricane named Grace merged with a powerful nor'easter to become what's still known as "the perfect storm."

Mexican Hot Chocolate with Tequila and Cayenne Pepper ? Food ...

For very many years I only associated tequila with bad margaritas or single shots taken quickly and finished with a lick of salt off of my hand followed by sucking on a wedge of lime (oh yes I did!).? About a decade ago I was schooled a bit about the value of aging and discovered the beauty of Reposado and Anejo tequilas. I began making my favorite margaritas and enjoyed good sipping tequila. It was a great lesson learned and those cocktails were good?but that was it, that was all tequila was good for, right?

Absolutely not! Last year I made a warm coffee cocktail that was spiked with tequila and Kahlau and it was so good. I think using tequila typically in conjunction with citrus has too often limited our imaginations when thinking about possibilities. Used in a cocktail like this one the effect is warming and rich and wonderful. You have to promise to try it so you can also enjoy how good it is!

I feel most fortunate to have developed relationships with some brands both new and previously unfamiliar that help to support this weekly effort by providing me with the adult beverages I need to do a cocktail each week. The best part might be trying something new and this tequila is a keeper. Peligroso Tequila is is a rare, 84 proof ultra premium Tequila from agave that is grown on an estate in Jalisco, Mexico. Their Silver tequila is just barely aged so not as smooth as a Reposado would be so I thought it would be perfect blended in this cocktail?a hot chocolate made from milk, Ibarra; a Mexican chocolate bar with cinnamon that is perfect for hot chocolate and the addition of Scharffenberger Natural Cocoa Powder that I thought would really up the chocolate factor; making it an even richer component.

We had some snow last night in Denver; fall here is as wacky as spring! 80 degrees one day; snow the next before all the leaves have turned and fallen! I?m going to try and survive?and this cocktail is going to help!

Mexican Hot Chocolate with Tequila and Cayenne Pepper

Mexican Hot Chocolate with Tequila and Cayenne Pepper

A wonderful and warming cocktail for fall and winter.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups Milk (I used 1% and it was good)
  • 1 and 1/2 bars Ibarra chocolate; broken into chunks
  • 6 Tbsp Scharffenberger Cocoa Powder

  • 1/8 - 1/4 tsp Cayenne Pepper (start with 1/8 tsp and season to taste)
  • 4 ozs Tequila
  • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
  • Ground Cinnamon for Garnish

Preparation

  1. Warm the milk in a medium size heavy saucepan on medium heat, watching carefully.
  2. Add the Ibarra chocolate, the cocoa powder and the sugar.
  3. Heat until the chocolate dissolves, whisking to combine all ingredients.
  4. Season with the cayenne pepper. Start with 1/8 teaspoon and season to your taste.
  5. Pour the warm milk into 2 large mugs and add 2 oz of tequila.
  6. Top with whipping cream; sprinkle whipping cream with cinnamon.

President Hu Jintao and other senior leaders on Friday visited an exhibition showcasing the country's progress in political, economic, cultural and ecological spheres over the past decade.

The exhibition, entitled "Scientific Development and Splendid Achievements," includes 2,110 photographs and 204 charts, as well as 765 objects, video clips and electronic photo albums.

The exhibits are intended to illustrate the country's achievements, including the holding of the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2010 Shanghai Expo, as well as its increasing grain output, reforms in the cultural industry and urban and rural social insurance.

During the visit, Hu hailed the achievements made by the Communist Party of China (CPC), the military and Chinese from all ethnic groups in reform and opening-up and the construction of socialist modernization since the 16th CPC National Congress.

"From a new historic starting point, we must hold high the banner of socialism with Chinese characteristics, forge ahead on the socialist path with Chinese characteristics unswervingly and continue to push forward scientific development, promote social harmony, improve people's livelihoods and interests and unremittingly strive for the full establishment of a moderately prosperous society and the realization of the revival of the Chinese nation," Hu said.

Other senior leaders, including Wu Bangguo, Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, He Guoqiang and Zhou Yongkang, also visited the exhibition.

The exhibition, scheduled to run from Friday to Nov. 26, is being sponsored by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, the National Development and Reform Commission, the People's Liberation Army General Political Department and the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee.

Wildlife Wellness: Harmony between Species | Partners in Wellness

?Globally Organized Crime Syndicates are penetrating secure wildlife populations.? ?An immense, increasingly sophisticated illegal trade in wildlife parts conducted by organized crime [is] decimating the world?s most beloved species?on a scale never before seen.? ~ Wildlife Conservation Society, USA

Creative Commons License photo credit: Schimalto

The practitioners of this multi-billion dollar illegal wildlife trade are violent enemies of conservation. The internet is the growing medium for the sale of illegal wildlife parts. (Lingo: ?wildlife parts? is kinda gruesome to me.) The wanton abuse, disregard and disrespect for ?any? life (wild or otherwise) fueled by love of money (or some other stinky diesel) is sad, appalling, sickening to me! (Yeah, that was partly an ?emotional? condemnatory statement. Let me follow it by a ?logical? acknowledgement that all of us have ?learned? a specific set of survival skills. Some a positive, civilized set and others a negative, barbaric set and/or everything in between the extreme set.) What is your survival skill set?

All of us, starting at a young age, have had a differing survival/values education of one kind or another. Each of us, depending on where (i.e. city mouse or country mouse) and when (decade/generation influences) we were born and to whom (our parents and their culture/education, etc.)?as well as other factors?provided the extensive variables that shaped and make up our personal/present value system/education. Hopefully, you were born to parents that highly valued you and loved/cherished you! Not everyone has had that privilege. Some have experienced betrayal at a very tender age.

For example, the despair learned by a young girl (i read about) named Sharada who was taken from her Asian village to a foreign city. Guess who sold her at age 9? Shockingly, Sharada?s father and for a measly $14 (U.S.). My heart breaks for Sharada and others like her who have been sold/forced into slavery. I wonder about Sharada?s father?like why he sold his daughter? Was he too sold at a young age and by whom?his father?!

Some of us have learned to care. Some not to care. Some have learned to give. Others have learned to take. Some have learned to love. Others have learned to hate. Some have learned to conserve. Others have learned to consume. Some have learned what it?s like to be free. Others have learned slavery. Some have learned harmony. Others disunity. Some have learned peace. Others war.

Creative Commons License photo credit 2: faeparsons Creative Commons License photo credit 3: byronv2

What have you learned? What will you teach? What are you teaching by your ?living? example?

Sadly, some have learned to survive the wild (and/or urban jungle) by slaughter and/or illegal sale. We all need survival skills, but in so-called ?civilized? or highly educated societies does one resort to doing whatever it takes including any type of illegal activity?! (i.e. kill or be killed?/sell or be sold?!)

Shouldn?t we value life?! It?s precious. FYI: I?m HAPPY to be alive!:) GLAD you?re alive too!:)?together we can help preserve life in and out of the jungle. Thank You for living in a manner that manifests a high regard for life!:)

Some tortoises live for 150 years! Some trees for 3,000! How long will you live?! How long will I live?!

By contrast, our lives are way more meaningful than a tortoise or tree. We have the capacity to enjoy reading, writing, learning, music,? sports, etc. We have a capacity for spirituality. (Figuratively, if I?m a tree, I don?t want to be cut down?my life cut short by my ax (choices) or somebody?s ax..sounds like ?acts? or actions of others that could shorten my life.)

Let?s not cut short life! (We know the devastating damage of deforestation.) Do you want your life cut short?! No Way?You say!:)

Caring, giving, loving, conservation, moderation is a life-style of daily choices leading to wellness and longevity! Appreciating, caring and respecting life (in general) is a factor to Wildlife Wellness and harmony between species!

As we grow, learn, progress as individuals, partners, caregivers, etc?.our on-going, progressive education of harmonious survival and high value for life ?literacy? requires an on-going vocabulary lesson and change of culture, choices, etc. Are you learning harmonious survival skills? We do so by putting non-offensive, positive, life-promoting (agape love) vocabulary/behavior into daily practice. We become fluent with practice. Harmony literacy is living and developing?

I?m a learner?everyday so much to learn, so little time. Thank you for listening/reading my blog/ramblings/rumblings, etc. :)? If I want to progress in learning/living in harmony and peace in the hopes of prolonging my life and the lives of others?I need humility. Am I humble enough to change?! It is possible to change/learn non-offensive, harmonious, peaceful communication and interaction between species!

Can you imagine a future where all life on the planet is at peace and living in complete harmony?! For that to happen?realistically, everyone has to make changes. What changes do you need to make? Do you value life, love, peace, harmony enough to make any?

Millions believe in ?the law of Karma??Hindu sages devised the law of Karma as they groped to explain human suffering. I was reading this interesting perspective from a Buddhist woman who said: ?I thought it did not make sense to have to suffer for something I was born with but about which I knew nothing. I had to accept it as my destiny.?? She found karma (?the influence of an individual?s past actions on his future lives, or reincarnations?) explanation for suffering unsatisfactory. I find it interesting the link between the idea of rebirth and the teaching that can found throughout Christendom and elsewhere?the teaching that humans have an immortal soul that survives the body. This ?soul? is said to be involved in suffering?either in a present life or in an afterlife. (Such ?ideas? are widespread so, I?m curious how these ideas affect the realm of care giving for the sufferer and partnerships in general)?

However, what ?proof? is there that these ideas are valid?! (I respect others? beliefs/ideas! Personally, any faith/belief? I may have is built/constructed/assembled on fact and proof?.not emotions, fantasy, graphic novels or fiction (science or otherwise). (Those things serve as an ?escape? from pain. The cause of my pain may still remain.)

It takes a lot of time, effort, research and work to build belief. When you think carefully and investigate the ?facts? surrounding ?any? idea/teaching/tradition to see if it?s true/valid?instead of about your feelings or the emotional response produced by an idea/fantasy/teaching/tradition, etc?your vision (your choices based on beliefs) are not hazy/clouded or swayed by unstable emotions and/or sentiment. You clearly see what makes sense and is reasonable/logical/healing (has the ring of truth) and what is a bunch of bologne -lol:) What are you building? Is your belief system a house of bricks/truth or a house of twigs/lies?! When the big bad wolf comes huffing and puffing?will he blow your house down?!

Here?s something to contemplate:

People who on average spend 6 hours each day watching TV can expect to live 4.8 years less than those who watch no TV. Put another way, every hour of TV reduces a sedentary adult?s life expectancy by about 22 minutes.? ~British Journal of Sports Medicine, Britain

According to BBC News, Britain:

Nearly half of cancers diagnosed in the [United Kingdom] each year-over 130,000 in total-are caused by avoidable life choices including smoking, drinking and eating the wrong things.

This is a tough rhetorical question(s)?you?re man or woman enough to honestly answer, right?:) Are you suffering or causing others to suffer because of avoidable life choices?!

Wildlife wellness : harmony between species?destiny or life choices?! YOU decide!:)

We all need comfort?every species?I ?found? this interesting verse of a Psalm (song) (which according to scholars is hope of future intervention by the Biblical Creator)?

?You are opening your hand and satisfying every living thing.?

Death Toll in Meningitis Outbreak Climbs to 25

Another person has died from fungal meningitis in an outbreak linked to tainted steroid injections, bringing the total to 25 deaths, health officials reported today.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has increased the tally of cases to 338: 331 cases of fungal meningitis and seven cases of joint infections. South Carolina became the 18th state affected by the outbreak on Sunday.

For a map of cases by state, click here.

The outbreak has been linked to contaminated vials of methylprednisolone acetate, an injectable steroid used to treat back and joint pain. Sealed vials of the steroid, made by the New England Compounding Center in Framingham, Mass., contained exserohilum rostratum, a fungus found in soil and plants. It's unclear how the fungus landed in the sealed vials.

Meningitis Outbreak: Death Toll Rises to 14 Watch Video Meningitis Outbreak Spreads, Full Recall Announced Watch Video

The New England Compounding Center has recalled all its products and shut down operations. Calls to the owners were not immediately returned.

As many as 14,000 patients are thought to have received injections of the suspect steroid.

Seventy-six clinics in 23 states that received methylprednisolone acetate from the recalled lots have been instructed to notify all affected patients. The "potentially contaminated injections were given starting May 21, 2012," according to the CDC.

For a full list of clinics receiving the recalled lots of spinal steroid injections, click here.

Meningitis affects the membranous lining of the brain and spinal cord. Early symptoms of fungal meningitis -- including headache, fever, dizziness, nausea, sensitivity to light, stiff neck, weakness or numbness, slurred speech and pain, and redness or swelling at the injection site -- can take more than a month to appear.

The longest duration from the time of injection to the onset of symptoms in the current outbreak is 42 days, according to the CDC's Dr. Benjamin Park.

"But we want to emphasize that we don't know what the longest will be," he added, stressing that patients who received injections of the recalled drug should stay attuned to the subtle symptoms "for months."

Fungal meningitis is diagnosed through a spinal tap, which draws cerebrospinal fluid from the spine that can be inspected for signs of the disease. Once detected, it can be treated with high doses of intravenous antifungal medications.

Unlike bacterial meningitis, fungal meningitis is not transmitted from person to person and only people who received the steroid injections are thought to be at risk.

Hands On With The EOS M, Canon?s First Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Camera

eos-m-2Canon waited quite a while to get into the mirrorless interchangeable lens camera (MILC) market, biding its time as competitors like Olympus, Panasonic and Sony built up strong reputations for their own small, slim mirrorless designs. But earlier this year, it introduced the EOS M, its first MILC offering., which I took for a test drive ahead of the PhotoPlus conference this year.
