Microsoft slashes Surface Pro price for the month of August, 64GB model down to $799

Microsoft slashes Surface Pro price for the month of August, 64GB model down to $799

Thought the Surface RT's $150 price drop was enticing? Hold on to your wallet: Microsoft's at it again. Over the weekend, Redmond quietly took $100 off of both its 64 and 128GB Surface Pro slates, bringing their base prices to $799 and $899, respectively. According to the fine print, the discount will hold until August 29th, but we wouldn't be surprised to the sale drag on if it moves units.

"We've been seeing great worldwide success with Surface RT pricing and keyboard-cover promotions over the past several months and our proud to offer Surface Pro at more affordable prices starting today," a Microsoft spokesperson told Engadget. "People who buy Surface love Surface, and we're eager for more people to their hands on Surface and share their excitement." It's not a staggering price reduction, but it's certainly enough to make buyers on the fence raise an eyebrow. You can check out the slate's new sticker price at the adjacent source link, but don't rush yourself -- you've got almost a month, after all.

San Diego mayor begins 2-week absence for therapy amid sexual harassment claims

Therapists say admitting one has a problem is the first step toward recovery. For San Diego Mayor Bob Filner that could be tricky.

The first-term mayor and former congressman starts two weeks of intensive therapy Monday while facing a sexual harassment lawsuit and calls for his resignation amid a flurry of allegations that he groped women for years.

Even as he undergoes treatment, Filner is set to be grilled by lawyers under oath this week in a lawsuit brought by his former communications director that claims he asked her to work without panties, told her he wanted to see her naked and dragged her around in a headlock while whispering in her ear.

Neither Filner nor his office has released details about his therapy or its location. Filner is picking up the tab for the treatment.

Filner's accusers, his one-time supporters and voters have expressed skepticism that any two-week program is an appropriate remedy for what Filner himself has described as years of inappropriate behavior toward women. Longtime therapists also questioned how much progress could be made.

"It is pie-in-the-sky to think that in two weeks anyone could be a new man," said Helen Friedman, a St. Louis psychologist who has treated compulsive sexual behavior for 30 years, though she said it was a good start.

Success will depend on how far the 70-year-old Filner goes in acknowledging his problems, experts said.

"Typically in the first few sessions you have to find someone you really trust," said Lilli Friedland, a Beverly Hills psychologist who advises business executives on sexual harassment. "'Can I open up with all my dirty laundry, and is this person expert enough?' It takes a number of sessions and visits to establish that trust."

Some voters wondered whether the therapy stint was simply an effort to buy time amid extraordinary pressure to resign.

"He needs to save face," said Christina Imhoof, 72, who voted for Filner in November but then quit the Democratic Party over the allegations. She said she suspects Filner will return after the time-out and say his therapist has encouraged him to resign for medical reasons.

Filner announced his plans on July 26 to enter a behavioral counseling clinic to "begin the process of addressing my behavior." He called it the first step in a continuing program that would involve ongoing counseling.

"I must become a better person ... I must demonstrate that my behavior has changed," Filner said then, while offering apologies and an acknowledgement that his "failure to respect women, and the intimidating contact, is inexcusable."

The mayor's office did not respond to interview requests.

Nine women, including a university dean and a retired Navy rear admiral, have gone public in the past month with accusations that Filner cornered them and made unwanted sexual advances that included groping and slobbering kisses. At least five renewed their calls for Filner to resign after he pledged to begin therapy.

"It is highly doubtful that two weeks of therapy will correct for decades of reprehensible behavior," said Laura Fink, who alleges that Filner patted her buttocks at a 2005 fundraiser when she was deputy campaign manager to the then-congressman.

One accuser, former Filner communications director Irene McCormack Jackson, has filed a harassment lawsuit against him. Her lawyer, Filner's attorney and city lawyers will depose him Friday.

Filner, the city's first Democratic leader in 20 years, will keep full powers while in therapy and said he would be briefed twice-daily on city business. Filner also has delegated significant authority, including the ability to sign contracts, to an interim chief operating officer, Walt Ekard, a former county administrator.

The mayor's absence comes during a summer lull, with the City Council on August recess. Nevertheless Filner's Republican predecessor, Jerry Sanders, said his absence occurs when the mayor's office normally "would get caught up, do a lot of policy work and make sure things got in order."

Sanders, who now leads the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, believes the scandal is affecting day-to-day business. He said department directors are hesitant to make decisions, that money has not been released for the city's tourism marketing district, and investors are reluctant to start projects.

"We are hearing companies saying: 'Why would we move to San Diego? With this going on the city is the absolute object of ridicule around the country,'" Sanders said.

Experts who spoke generally about treatment approaches and not specifically about Filner said patients being treated for addictive or compulsive sexual behavior typically get a medical examination to rule out chemical imbalances or other physical ailments.

Therapists would try to build trust so the patient is comfortable sharing personal information and try to determine if the person is in denial.

Once a problem is acknowledged, doctors try to identify what triggers the behavior so patients can develop a coping mechanism, build a support network and find other ways to control it. Long-term treatment may involve weekly group or individual therapy.

Friedman said any such recovery requires hard work over a lifetime.

"People feel after an inpatient stay that they have things under control," she said. "However, when they are back in their usual environment, they're confronted with the same triggers that got them into treatment."

Ask Engadget: best retro gaming / homebrew machine?

Ask Engadget: best outdoor TV?

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, then here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is from Brady, who just wants to play NBA Jam, dammit. If you're looking to ask one of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

"Hey, I used to be really into the homebrew and homemade software communities, but times changed and I fell out of the scene. Now I'd like to get back into it, and would love a new device that'll let me play all of these old-school games without having to chop and change -- letting me swap between titles like Mario Kart 64 and NBA Jam without any effort. There are so many new options, from buying an OUYA through to snagging a new PC, so what's my best (and cheapest) bet? Plus, anything that can take a wireless controller is a big plus. Thanks!"

Well, we're thinking that if you're prepared to get your hands a little dirty, the OUYA can be turned into an Android-based emulator thanks to its hacking-friendly setup. If that's a bit too rich for your bones, however, you can set up EmulationStation on a Raspberry Pi which will let you run a wide variety of consoles from the same piece of hardware. Still, let's turn this question over to the Engadgeteers for them to share their experiences.

Group: Israel expands subsidies to settlements

JERUSALEM (AP) ? The Israeli Cabinet on Sunday expanded its list of West Bank settlements eligible for government subsidies, a decision that came just days after the resumption of long-frozen peace talks and drew quick Palestinian condemnation.

The Cabinet approved a range of housing subsidies and loans for more than 600 Israeli communities deemed "national priority areas," expanding an earlier list. The list includes poor towns in Israel's outlying areas, but also dozens of settlements.

The Palestinians want to establish a state in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem ? lands Israel captured in 1967 ? and renewed talks are to draw Israel's borders with such a state. Since 1967, Israel has built dozens of settlements on war-won land ? deemed illegal by most of the international community ? that are home to some 560,000 Israelis.

Israel's government hopes to encourage more people to move to the communities on the "national priorities" list. The last version of the list was approved in 2012.

The Israeli anti-settlement group Peace Now said the list approved Sunday increased the total number of settlements eligible for subsidies from 85 to 91, virtually all in areas Israel would likely have to evacuate to make way for a Palestinian state.

Lior Amihai of Peace Now said three of the settlements added to the list had begun as rogue settlements that were established without formal government consent and then legalized retroactively.

Hanan Ashrawi, a member of the Palestinian negotiating team, said Sunday's vote affirms Palestinian suspicions that Israel seeks the diplomatic shield of negotiations, without being willing to reach an actual partition deal.

"This is exactly what Israel wants, have a process for its own sake, and at the same time have a free hand to destroy the objective of the process," he said. "This will have a destructive impact (on the talks), and it seems to me it's up to the sponsors, the United States and the international community, to make Israel desist immediately."

Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said that in the case of settlements, any housing or infrastructure subsidies require additional government approval.

Four Israeli ministers abstained from the Cabinet vote, citing the potential harm to negotiations.

"To include settlements that until recently were illegal, when it's doubtful that they will remain a part of Israel, and to disproportionately invest in them ? I think it is not the time, politically speaking and socioeconomically speaking," Environment Minister Amir Peretz told Israel Radio.

Peace negotiations began in Washington last week, and will continue in Jerusalem next week. The U.S. wants a deal on the terms of a Palestinian state within nine months.

As part of the talks, Israel is to free 26 long-held Palestinian prisoners on Aug. 13, chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat. It would be the first of four groups of a total of 104 veteran prisoners to be freed over the next few months.

The release is part of a U.S.-brokered deal that cleared the way for the resumption of talks.

(AP) ? Inbee Park caught the bad end of the draw at St. Andrews, made worse by not having her best golf.

Before she can think about a chance to make history as the first golfer to win four professional majors in the same season, Park faced a more immediate concern Friday afternoon in the Women's British Open ? how to make up an eight-shot deficit against Na Yeon Choi.

"I'm so far back," Park said after a birdie on the final hole to salvage a 1-over 73. "We need some tough conditions."

The last time there was talk about a Grand Slam in this area of Scotland was 11 years ago, across the Firth of Forth at Muirfield, where Tiger Woods was going for the third leg of the slam. A nasty storm that arrived without warning blew him off course to an 81 in the third round and that was the end of it.

This wind at St. Andrews was the strongest of the week, though nothing out of the ordinary.

Choi played four groups behind Park and turned in a command performance, making six birdies for a 5-under 67 that gave her a one-shot lead over Miki Saiki of Japan going into the weekend. Saiki set the Old Course record for the Women's British Open with a 66 in the morning, where the only nuisance was a few bursts of showers.

Choi's 67 was 8.4 shots better than the average score of those who played in the afternoon, and one of only three rounds in the 60s. Conditions were so demanding that when Choi was asked to give details of her six birdies, the South Korean couldn't recall much further back than the 17th hole.

"Five hours out there, this kind of weather, it's hard to remember," she said.

It's a round Park would like to forget, one that will make her quest even more difficult to add to her trio of majors this year.

"A little bit of everything wasn't working well out there today," Park said. "I don't feel like I played horrible today. A little bit unlucky with the draw, not playing in the morning when it's lovely. But that's the way it is."

Her problems started on the opening hole, when her approach over the Swilcan Burn rode the wind and bounced beyond the green some 50 feet from the flag. Her chip only got halfway there, and she two-putted for bogey.

Park was never under par at any point in her round. A birdie on the sixth was offset by a three-putt bogey on the 10th. A birdie on the 12th was followed by a bogey on the 13th, in part due to a bad break. On the toughest driving hole on the back nine, Park hit her best tee shot ? only for it to roll into a sand-filled divot. Her approach came up just short of the green, and she hit putter down the slope and 10 feet past the cup.

Her approach to the 17th ran up the left side of the Road Hole Bunker and left her about 60 feet, and she hit another poor lag ? short and 8 feet to the right ? leading to her second three-putt of the round, and fourth of the tournament.

At least she still had 36 holes ? and plenty of hope ? remaining to get back in the race. It was tough for everyone in the afternoon ? except for Choi, who had a score that looked as if she were on the New Course ? and Park isn't ruling herself out.

Neither is anyone else.

"The tough, gritty players can win this," Stacy Lewis said after a hard-fought 72 left her five shots behind. "Anybody under par is not out of this."

Morgan Pressel took another step toward locking up a spot on the Solheim Cup team with a 70 in the morning, leaving her two shots out of the lead. She now can think squarely about the Women's British Open, and perhaps adding a second major to the Kraft Nabisco Championship she won in 2007 as an 18-year-old.

Nicole Castrale, also making a last-ditch effort to make the Solheim Cup team, shot 34 on the tough back nine for a 70 and was in the group at 7-under 137 that included Jee Young Lee and Suzann Pettersen.

Choi is a former U.S. Women's Open champion, so she has proved she can handle difficult conditions. What helped was having her entire team with her this week ? notably her Irish coach, Robin Symes, and his friend, who is working as a caddie. Her game management coaches, Pia Nilsson and Lynn Marriott, also are at St. Andrews.

She had to handle the blustery wind by herself.

"I had a daily goal, so I just tried to stick with the goal," Choi said. "It could be like par is 74 or 75 today. But I didn't care ? par 3, par 4, par 5, doesn't matter to me. I just try to play one shot at a time, and I think that's why I had great results."

Even as the second round was finishing, it was clear this was a special round.

Birdies were mainly available on the outward nine, and it was all about hanging on from the 12th through the 17th holes. Choi hit a 3-hybrid off the tee on the 16th and a 3-wood into the green, and she hit driver and 3-wood to finish just short of the 17th green in two. From about 45 yards, she putted the ball to 3 feet for a tough par.

Park spoke about having nerves before she teed off Thursday. She conceded after the second round she felt the pressure of this historic chance when she first arrived at St. Andrews. She didn't see it as a burden, but an opportunity, saying that no matter what happens this week, it would teach her to handle any situation the rest of her career.

"When you experience something big like this, some kind of big pressure like this, you're just really not afraid of any kind of pressure," Park said. "How can it get bigger than this? Anything is going to be less than this."

After making birdie on the 18th, she did an interview with ESPN and then Golf Channel. After that, she stopped for a group of Korean TV reporters, who shouted instructions on where she should stand and to the two employees holding microphones. When she spoke to 10 reporters afterward, someone asked if she imagined having so much media gathered around her to ask so many questions.

"Well, this is pretty much the only week I'm going to get that much, so I should enjoy this moment," Park said.

Pilot and two passengers killed after small plane crashes in South Carolina

Stephanie Robusto / WMBF

By Tracy Jarrett, NBC News

A pilot and two passengers were confirmed dead after a small plane went down in a South Carolina subdivision on Saturday, police said.

The small private plane crashed near the entrance of the Wood Creek subdivision in Conway, S.C., around 1:20 pm local time, said Kirk Lovell, marketing director at the Horry County Department of Airports.

The pilot was James Major, 39, of Conway, said Horry County Deputy Coroner Darris Fowler. The passengers were Kenneth Piuma of Myrtle Beach, S.C., who was in his early 40s, and Donald Dale Decker, 16, of Conway, according to Fowler.

Some?power lines in the area?were taken down by the aircraft, Lt. Selena Small of the Conway Police Department told NBC News, causing some outages. The plane landed in the entrance to the subdivision and did not damage any homes, she said. A fire on the ground has been put out.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are on their way to the scene, Small said. They are expected to arrive by Saturday evening.

The plane is a general aviation plane that left from Conway Airport, Lovell confirmed to NBC News.

Whirlwind wedding allows dying son to be best man for his parents

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Couple weds with their terminally ill son, 2, as best man
  • The marriage took place in the backyard of the family's home
  • After a grim diagnosis from doctors, the wedding was planned within a week

(CNN) -- Dressed in a tan suit and an orange shirt matching his mom's bouquet, 2-year-old Logan looked on as his parents exchanged vows and rings at a backyard wedding.

Guests who gathered under a white arbor in the Jeanette, Pennsylvania, home applauded -- but many with tears in their eyes.

Because this union of Christine Swidorsky and Sean Stevenson was no ordinary wedding.

The couple had planned it for ages, and had penciled July 2014 as their special day. But that was before they learned that their best man -- Logan -- had just weeks to live.

The boy is suffering from leukemia, brought on by a genetic disorder, Fanconi anemia.

"We've been waiting for this day for a long time, but under the circumstances with Logan being sick all the time, we just held off," Stevenson told CNN affiliate KDKA. "We always knew he was going to get better."

HIDE CAPTION

"But under the circumstances of what the doctors told us, we just decided to go ahead and do it while he was still with us."

Christine Swidorsky carried Logan down the aisle. His grandmother cradled her in his arms, his favorite brown teddy bear by his side.

"This is our dream come true, all our family together, and we're all together celebrating. The celebration of my son's life and the celebration of our marriage," Swidorsky said, as Etta James' "At Last" played in the background.

Fighting since birth

Born on October 22, 2010, Logan weighed just three pounds. Eating troubles kept Logan in the hospital, but he kept fighting, kept growing, and was soon home with his parents and his two older sisters.

And for his first year, he grew, he was healthy, and he made his family unspeakably happy. Even today, as his life nears an end, Swidorsky struggles to find words to say what an amazing little boy he is.

Just after Logan's first birthday, Swidorsky noticed that he wasn't feeling well again, and his lips and fingernails had turned white. Over the course of a month, she took Logan to the pediatrician four times before the head pediatrician tended to him. When he did, he quickly called 911.

Swidorsky said Logan shocked doctors at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. His leukemia had progressed so far, they were surprised he was still alive. Chemotherapy was started right away, taking an extraordinary toll on his body.

The couple learned more devastating news shortly after: Logan has a genetic disorder called Fanconi anemia, which most frequently results in death, most commonly from cancer, between the ages of 25 and 30.

But Logan fought hard, just like he had done as a newborn. He landed in the ICU but pulled through, and by July 13, 2012, doctors were prepared to give him a blood stem cell transplant.

After his stem cell treatment, he was free of leukemia for nine months, eating and acting like any other child. Life started to feel normal for Logan's family.

But Swidorsky's gut feeling returned when she saw Logan acting strange again.

Cancer again

It was cancer again: a mass the size of an orange on Logan's larger and better-functioning kidney. Doctors had no choice but to remove the kidney, just a week before Easter this year.

Life gained a long-sought-after normalcy for Logan and the family, except for the twice-weekly visits to a clinic for his chemotherapy. The therapy, though not a perfect solution for Logan, would hopefully prevent a recurrence of the cancer, despite being a lower dose than average.

Logan's life continued to improve.

"He was eating bowl after bowl" of spaghetti, Swidorsky said. "It was a wonderful feeling."

But then he started getting fevers and throwing up.

Logan's left side swelled as the mass returned, where the kidney once was.

"I thought he was doing so well. It's like you take two steps forward, 15 back," Swidorsky said.

The doctors told Logan's family that they could only do more harm than good.

In June, as the family's fortunes continued to fail, the Make a Wish Foundation treated them to a trip to Disney World.

But after just four hours there, Logan was back in the hospital.

Eight days of torture ensued, as he had developed an infection and eventually needed to be flown home to Jeannette, about 40 minutes from Pittsburgh.

Finally, on July 26, doctors gave Logan one to two weeks to live.

Not giving up

But that doesn't mean Logan's parents are giving up.

"We're just blessed everyday that he's here with us," Stevenson said Saturday, after the ceremony. "We're not going to stop fighting. We have nothing to lose.

"I'm going to try until God says otherwise."

Red Sox owner enters $70M deal for Boston Globe

BOSTON (AP) ? Businessman John Henry, the principal owner of the Boston Red Sox, has entered into an agreement to buy The Boston Globe for $70 million, a massive drop from its record $1.1 billion price two decades ago.

The impending purchase from The New York Times Co. marks Henry's "first foray into the financially unsettled world of the news media," the Globe said Saturday. The deal will give Henry the 141-year-old newspaper, its websites and affiliated companies, it said.

The Times announced in February it was putting the Globe and related assets up for sale four years after calling off a previous attempt to sell it. The company's CEO said at the time selling the Globe would help the company focus attention on The New York Times brand.

Times spokeswoman Eileen Murphy confirmed the planned sale of the Globe and other media properties to Henry. The Times said the all-cash sale, expected to close in 30 to 60 days, includes BostonGlobe.com, Boston.com, The Worcester Telegram & Gazette, Telegram.com, the direct mail marketing company Globe Direct and the company's 49 percent interest in Metro Boston, a free daily newspaper for commuters.

Henry, in a statement published by the Globe, cited the "essential role that its journalists and employees play in Boston, throughout New England, and beyond."

"The Boston Globe's award-winning journalism as well as its rich history and tradition of excellence have established it as one of the most well respected media companies in the country," Henry said.

Henry, who also owns the English Premier League soccer club Liverpool F.C., said he would reveal details about his plans for the Globe in the next few days.

Globe editor Brian McGrory said the newspaper's Red Sox coverage and its editorial decisions won't be affected by the sale.

"We have no plans whatsoever to change our Red Sox coverage specifically, or our sports coverage in general, nor will we be asked," McGrory told the newspaper. "The Globe's sports reporting and commentary is the gold standard in the industry."

The Times bought the Globe from the family of former Globe executive Stephen Taylor in 1993 for what it said was the highest price paid for an American newspaper. The price Henry is paying is less than 7 percent of the 1993 price.

The Globe and other newspapers have faced difficulties in recent years as readers have fled to the Internet and advertisers have cut spending on newspapers and moved more ads online. Still, the Globe is a journalistic institution in New England and was lauded for its coverage of the deadly Boston Marathon bombings in April.

A 2009 round of cost-cutting, involving pay cuts, helped put the Globe on better financial footing and prompted the Times to call off a planned sale. In late 2011, the Globe started charging for access to its online version at BostonGlobe.com, which helped to boost circulation revenues.

The Times company doesn't separate Globe revenue from The New York Times revenue in its financial statements. But the Globe had an average weekday circulation of 230,351 in the six months through September, according to the Alliance for Audited Media. The newspaper's increase in digital subscriptions more than offset declines in print. But the total is still down significantly from the nearly 413,000 it boasted in September 2002.

The Globe isn't the only newspaper to see a huge drop in its price at sale time.

In April 2012, Philadelphia's two largest newspapers sold for $55 million, a fraction of the $515 million paid by a group of investors in 2006. The buyers of the Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily News included influential New Jersey Democrat George Norcross III, former New Jersey Nets owner Lewis Katz and cable TV mogul H.F. "Gerry" Lenfest.

China's political fracking in earthquake prone Sichuan

By Rakesh Neelakandan
US has virtually seen a production renaissance in the energy front and is witnessing its competency in other sectors of manufacturing going up on cheap energy prices.

This has once again kick-started cheap consumption cycles in US. The US Current Account Deficit, previously worth trillions of Dollars has come down substantially riding the domestic consumption wave. This has also caused US' non-energy imports to decline in value.

?America?s shale revolution may turn out to be rather deflationary for the world economy on a number of accounts. First, it puts a cap on US energy prices by pushing supply sharply higher. Second, it frees America from the global oligopoly in energy markets, making its industry very competitive. Third, it is helping spur a US economic recovery driven by domestic aggregate demand,? Bank of America Merrill Lynch noted in a recent report.

Now, for a nation that consumes humongous figures of crude oil in barrel terms, desperate to reorient its economy?s moorings to consumption led growth, finicky about inflation and a growing population that accounts for almost one-sixth of the world, should not this translate into a shale oil/gas exploration boom? Even if it means fracking in an earth-quake prone area?

For China, the reasons are political. The slump in manufacturing in China has resulted in the nation losing its double digit growth steam. This means loss of jobs and associated potential social unrest in a political system which lacks safety valves. Unless China grows, Communist Party of China will not be able to maintain the hold on political power.

The Sichuan region has seen an earth quake in 2008 which claimed 70000 lives. But the region is reserve rich and in partnership with Royal Dutch Shell, China National Petroleum has begun fracking there.

This makes good business sense, because China accounts for double the shale gas reserves in US at 1115 trillion cubic feet.

Reports suggest that shale industry boom in US $690 billion to US GDP and also create 1.7 million in jobs by the time this decade ends.

By undertaking fracking, China, is taking a leaf out of the book of US.

However, it comes with its own unique challenges. The first problem is that of earth quakes and the second problem is that of contamination of water tables in China; fracking needs millions of gallons of water and toxic chemicals to be injected into shale formation.?US Geological Survey has noted that ?at some locations the increase in seismicity coincides with the injection of wastewater in deep disposal wells,? rt.com said in a report, though the report adds that fracking and earth quakes are not directly related.

A nation with a record of lax environmental law implementation, China also may face water scarcity as the chemicals contaminate the water table altering the ?drinking water status? of this universal solvent.

In short, the sustainability of China shale oil boom is under question. After all, Royal Dutch Shell has decided to pump $1 billion a year into China shale reserves extraction.

Producer Albert Podell and the York Shakespeare Company have announced their world premiere production of Alexander Harrington's The Great Society. Seth Duerr will direct the four-week limited engagement at the Clurman Theatre. Performances are set to begin August 3 in advance of an August 8 opening, and will run through August 24.

Playwright Alexander Harrington is the son of Michael Harrington, author of The Other America: Poverty in the United States, which profoundly impacted President Kennedy's administration and helped to spark President Lyndon B. Johnson's War on Poverty. The Great Society continues this political legacy, following President Johnson after being unexpectedly thrust into power as he fights to end legal segregation and wage war on poverty. Harrington's interest in President Johnson was inspired by his father's comment "Jack Kennedy was a dilettante when it came to poverty; Lyndon Johnson was serious about doing something for the poor of this country."

The Great Society stars Mitch Tebo (The Revenger's Tragedy) as Lyndon Johnson; Elena McGhee (Blue Bloods) as Lady Bird Johnson; Yaakov Sullivan as Richard Russell; James Lurie (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) as J. William Fulbright; Curtis Wiley (Broadway National Tour: The Lion King) as Martin Luther King, Jr.; Charles Gray (Broadway: The Color Purple) as Bayard Rustin; Reed Armstrong (Broadway: Miss Saigon) as Robert McNamara; Charles F. Wagner IV (Regional: The Tempest) as Hubert Humphrey and Seymore Trammell; Robert Ierardi (West End: West Side Story) as Everett Dirksen and Nicholas Katzenbach; Jeff Burchfield as Strom Thurmond and George Wallace, and Mac Brydon (Lipstick Jungle) as Jack Valenti, as well as Wayne Morse.

The creative team features scenic design by Michael Minahan, costume design by Sean Sullivan, lighting design by Dana Sterling, props design by Preesa Adeline Bullington, and music/sound design by John D. Ivy.

Firefighter killed in Oregon is identified as crews battle blazes

By Teresa Carson

PORTLAND, Ore. - (Reuters) - A firefighter killed while battling a central Oregon wildfire has been identified as John Hammack of Madras, Oregon, officials said on Friday, as crews aided briefly by cooler, wetter weather grappled with blazes that have blackened more than 200 square miles (520 square km) of the Pacific Northwest.

Hammack died and another firefighter was injured when the top of a tree they were removing from the fire area outside the town of Sisters on Thursday broke off and crashed down on Hammack, who was 58, the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

Other officials said Hammack was 60.

The surviving firefighter, Norman Crawford, was treated at a hospital for shoulder injuries and has been released, according to local reports. Both men, contract tree fellers, were part of a firefighting team.

"This is a tough loss for Oregon," said Governor John Kitzhaber, who is set to visit a fire area in the southern part of the West Coast state on Saturday.

The current fire season has been particularly deadly in the U.S. West. Nineteen Arizona firefighters died in June after they became trapped by a wind-whipped inferno, and two people perished after being caught in a blaze in Colorado.

Thousands of firefighters fought to snuff out or at least contain blazes that had burned more than 40,000 acres of timber and range land across Oregon on Friday, 5,000 acres more than on Thursday, said Carol Connolly, a spokeswoman for the Northwest Interagency Coordination Center.

Nighttime and early morning lightning strikes sparked dozens of new fires, Connelly said, adding that emergency crews were helped by cooler temperatures and higher humidity, a streak likely to end next week with hotter weather and possibly more lightning-bearing storms.

In neighboring Washington state, more than 2,100 firefighters were making steady progress against a pair of blazes that have scorched more than 107,000 acres east of the Cascade Range.

About 45 structures remained at high risk from the so-called Colockum Tarps fire burning south of Wenatchee, said Mary Ellen Fitzgerald, a U.S. Forest Service official and a spokeswoman for firefighting efforts.

That fire, which has burned more than 80,000 acres in less than a week, has claimed three houses and five other buildings, including three outhouses. It was 30 percent contained as of Friday morning as firefighters were aided by light rain and fortuitous winds pushing smoke away from the containment line, Fitzgerald said.

Farther south, the so-called Mile Marker 28 fire, which has blackened 27,000 acres close to the Oregon border, is 75 percent contained, with residents of 69 homes forced to flee allowed to return as of Wednesday.

US: China's human rights situation is getting worse

The top US human rights official said she was?particularly worried by the way the Chinese authorities harass the relatives of dissidents.

By Peter Ford,?Staff Writer / August 2, 2013

US Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Uzra Zeya (l.) speaks to reporters at a news briefing on the latest US-China Human Rights Dialogue Friday, Aug. 2, 2013, in Beijing. China?s human rights record is getting worse and the Chinese government was not forthcoming in recent talks about the issue, senior US diplomat Zeya said Friday.

China?s human rights record is getting worse and the Chinese government was not forthcoming in recent talks about the issue, the top US human rights official said here?on Friday.

?We have continued to see a deterioration in the overall human rights situation,? Uzra Zeya, acting assistant secretary of state for democracy, human rights, and labor, told reporters. ?China?s policies and practices have fallen significantly short of international standards.?

Ms. Zeya was commenting on two days of talks that she had held earlier this week in the southwestern city of Kunming, the 18th ?round of an annual human rights dialogue between the US and China that critics have often?derided as worthless.

When she asked about the health and whereabouts of a number of well-known dissidents in detention, Zeya said, Chinese answers ?fell short of our expectation.?

Critics have long argued that the human rights dialogue is of little value. ?It has not had any discernible impact in recent years,? says Maya Wang, a researcher in Hong Kong for Human Rights Watch. ?These talks are more of a diplomatic exercise than a serious tool to press China on the issues.?

Zeya, however, defended the effort as ?a vital part of US diplomacy,? adding that ?the fact that it is difficult is not a reason to abandon engagement.?

Even before Zeya and her colleagues had left for the airport?on Friday, however, Beijing police arrested Xiao Shu, a veteran journalist and social activist who had been calling for the release of another prominent social justice campaigner, Xu Zhiyong, who was detained two weeks ago and has not been heard from since.

?Mr. Xu, founder of the ?New Citizens Movement,? is the best known of more than a dozen activists who have been arrested in recent weeks in connection with a public campaign urging government officials to disclose their assets, in a bid to curb corruption.

IN DEPTH: Decoding Chinese President Xi Xinping's 'China Dream'

The official campaign against public interest lawyers, journalists, and other intellectuals advocating greater respect for the rule of law took an ugly turn?Thursday, when the state-run news agency, Xinhua, published a diatribe against them.?

Branding such government critics as ?slaves of the West? and ?traitorous online activists,? the widely republished article accused them of hoping to bring ?humiliating disaster on China.?

It seemed an eloquent riposte to Zeya, who said she had stressed ?the importance of allowing citizens to express their concerns about the direction? China is taking.

Zeya said she was particularly worried by the way the Chinese authorities harass the relatives of dissidents. For example, Liu Xia, the wife of Liu Xiaobo, the Nobel Prize winner currently serving a 12-year jail sentence, is not allowed out of her house, although she has never been charged with any crime.?

Chen Kegui, the nephew of blind lawyer Chen Guangcheng, who fled to the United States last year, is in jail, and members of Mr. Chen?s family have complained that thugs in their village have torn up plants from their farmland, punctured the tires on their cars, and dumped dead poultry in their yards.

Zombie apocalypse: Supposedly dead Garmin outperforms leading smartphone vendors

Garmin PND Market Analysis

Apple posted a 20% profit decline?in its spring quarter. Personal navigation device (PND) vendor Garmin just?delivered a comparatively mild?7% earnings decline. If anyone had forecast this outcome two years ago, he would have been branded as a lunatic. Or possibly a dark prophet of apocalypse: ?And when he had opened the?third seal, I heard the?third beast say, Come and see; And I beheld, and lo a PND vendor that was supposed to be dead outperformed the most profitable smartphone vendor in history in annualized profit trend comparison.?

[More from BGR: BlackBerry Messenger for Android exclusively pictured for the first time]

So Garmin?s share price went up 7% on its spring earnings report. Over the past three months, Garmin?s shares have moved up by more than 15%, outpacing Apple with sinuous ease. Both BlackBerry and HTC are down more than 40% over the same period. This was not how most people thought things would?pan out. The PND?business was supposed to go into meltdown mode while smartphone vendors were supposed to soar. What actually happened was that Garmin has been able to hold the PND decline to an astonishingly moderate pace. Its automotive and mobile segment posted only a 12% annualized sales decline in the spring quarter. The small fitness, aviation and marine units are delivering modest growth.

[More from BGR: Next-gen iPad rear shell revealed in leaked photos]

Delivering pretty weak numbers while Wall Street expects a disaster can work out OK for a company?s share price. And as it turns out, several notable?smartphone vendors have been the ones that have shocked the Wall Street the most: Nokia, HTC and BlackBerry all have seen their profits turn into losses, while even Apple has now posted two consecutive quarters of profit declines.

Over the past 12 months, Garmin?s share price has outperformed Apple by more than 20%. This is worth keeping in mind the next time you see an apparent slam dunk in the equity market. Is Netlfix going to outperform Zynga over the next year? Think about it.

Saints Row IV loses 'alien narcotics' mission to gain approval in Australia

Saints Row cleared for sale in Australia after removal of 'alien narcotics' mission

We knew the Australian Classification Board had fundamental objections to Saints Row IV. What we didn't know, however, was that these sticking points boiled down to just a single 20-minute side mission, in which the player gained superpowers by smoking "alien narcotics" with a character called Shaundi. That mission has now been exorcised, microwaved and buried in a sanitary disposal tank somewhere in the outback. According to Eurogamer, the only other change to the Australian version of Saints Row IV is the removal of a weapon called the Rectifier, which the censors were too anal to appreciate, but which will still be available to players as DLC. Meanwhile, we're taking bets on how long it'll be before the full, uncut title hits shelves Down Under as a premium box set.

India lose 0-3 to Netherlands in Women's Jr WC semifinal

Monchengladbach (Germany), Aug 2, 2013, (PTI)

India's dream run in the Women's Junior Hockey World Cup came to a halt after defending champions Netherlands defeated them 3-0 in the second semifinal, here today.

The Indians, who registered their best ever performance in this tournament, put up a brave fight against their fancied rivals but it was not enough to earn them a place in the title clash.

The Dutch girls sounded the board thrice through Lieke van Wijk (17th minute), Lisanne de Lange (57th) and Lisa Scheerlinck (68th) to complete a resounding victory and seal their place in Sunday's final.

While Netherlands will face Argentina in the summit clash, India will take on England for the third-fourth place play off match on Sunday.

In the first semifinal, Argentina defeated England by an identical 3-0 margin.

In the first half, much of the action was centred around the midfield as both the teams struggled to create promising scoring opportunities from open play.

India put an inspired performance in the opening 17 minutes before Netherlands took the lead through tournament's top-scorer van Wijk, who converted her side's first penalty corner with a fierce dragflick that beat rival goalkeeper Chanu Sanarik Ningombam all ends up.

A few minutes later, the Dutch girls forced another penalty corner but the resultant shot went wide

'Toffs' in red trousers a turn-off for nearly half of Britons

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's class-conscious public have voiced their dislike of men in red trousers, associating them with elitism and garish buffoonery, according to a survey this week.

Just under half the respondents (46 percent) to a survey released by market research firm YouGov said they don't like men in red trousers.

"Gentlemen be warned. Wearing red trousers will not win you many admirers," YouGov said in an article about the sartorial study on their website.

Words such as "idiot", "odd" and "clown" sprang to the minds of respondents when confronted with the sight of a man sporting red trousers, YouGov said.

British Esquire magazine's Senior Fashion Editor Gareth Scourfield told Reuters that although continental men in France and Italy have been getting away with colourful clothes for years, Britons tended to be more reserved.

"I think the problem is it has a connotation as a rich man's casual wear," he said.

Class-ridden connotations for RTs, as they are known to aficionados, are hard to shake off in a country where privileged people are often mocked as "toffs" or "rahs".

But socialite and fashion journalist Henry Conway launched a defence of them in the Guardian on Thursday, citing their illustrious history from stylish 15th century scarlet breeches in Britain to Napoleonic army uniforms.

"I have to admit, I have a delicious pair in bold blood," he wrote. "I know they make me look like a total rah, but they are soft and beautiful..."
