4 Discussion topics that will boost your bond

Remember how much you used to talk when you first started dating your partner or spouse? You likely used to discuss everything, often well into the wee hours. If you?ve found conversation to be lacking lately and limited to whose turn it is to do the dishes, we suggest adding (or resurrecting) the topics below to help strengthen your bond.

Couple talking about feelings

Goals -- yours and his

What do you want to accomplish beyond the usual day-to-day things you need to cross off your to-do list? What about your husband? If it?s been years since you sat down and talked about what you would really love to do, now is the time to start opening up. Whether you?ve always wanted to run a marathon, get your pilot?s license, learn to speak French or finally finish writing that novel you started 10 years ago, share your big goals with your guy. The more you talk about what you want to do, the more likely it is to happen. Through talking about the goals you both have, you can motivate each other toward your biggest ambitions.

Fears

What scares you? What holds you back? What keeps you up at night? These are some intense but important topics to bring up with your significant other. Like discussing your goals can help you achieve them, talking about your fears can go a long way towards making them seem less significant. Not to mention, when you open up to each other in a way that makes you both vulnerable, you?ll see a huge increase in your overall bond.

6 Ways to conquer your biggest fears >>

Disappointments

Talking about the things that don?t work out is never easy, but it will help you move forward. Open up to your partner about the promotion you didn?t get, the fact that you haven?t been able to lose the five pounds you were hoping to drop by now or your softball team?s failure to make the semifinals -- talking about disappointments has a way of making them hurt less and even motivates you to try again or try harder next time. When your guy opens up to you about the things that he?s disappointed in, you can help him move forward -- it?s win-win.

Future plans as a couple

Beyond talking about your own personal goals, it?s helpful to talk about what you want to do as a couple, from the basic (paint the living room, overhaul the garden) to the major (take a three month trip to Europe, expand your family). It can be so easy to get caught up talking about day-to-day responsibilities (what to make for dinner, how to stop the dog from shredding the couch), that you forget to discuss the things that really matter -- your future together and how to make the most of life.

China to protesters: 'Please express your patriotism in a rational and orderly fashion'

Chinese protesters followed the rules on Tuesday, obediently forming small groups and awaiting their turn to march past the Japanese embassy to express anger over disputed islands.

By Peter Ford,?Staff writer / September 18, 2012

A demonstrator shouts slogans during a protest in front of a Chinese national flag on the 81st anniversary of Japan's invasion of China, in Shanghai, Sept. 18. Anti-Japan protests reignited across China on Tuesday, the emotional anniversary marking Tokyo's occupation of its giant neighbor, escalating a maritime dispute which has forced major Japanese brandname firms to suspend business there.

It was an SMS from the Beijing police. Barely had I arrived in the vicinity of the Japanese embassy, the target of a fourth day of protests over a territorial dispute, than the message popped up on my screen.

?The Beijing Public Security Bureau reminds you to please express your patriotism in a rational and orderly fashion and to follow police instructions. Thank you for your cooperation,? it read.

The Chinese government was clearly anxious that Tuesday?s demonstrations, marking the anniversary of the incident that sparked Japan?s 1931 occupation of Northeastern China, should not turn violent, as had happened over the weekend.

The protesters, mostly young men, many waving red and gold Chinese flags or portraits of Mao Zedong, were doing as they were told by organizers. Obediently they formed up in small groups and awaited their turn to march past the embassy, where they slowed down just long enough to throw bottles of water at the gates.

Any hotheads in the crowd who might have wanted to do more were dissuaded by the sight of helmeted riot police standing shoulder to shoulder along the roadside, reinforcing thousands of police officers who were making sure, megaphones in hand, that everybody kept moving. Also reinforcing the police were civilian security volunteers wearing armbands, and reinforcing them were dayglo-orange-waistcoated traffic wardens.

Then the protesters marched on down the street in glorious late summer sunshine, chanting slogans such as ?Japanese dogs out of China,? or ?China wake up,? and even reminding themselves, in unison, to ?listen to orders.??

A block down the street they turned around, marched back down the way they had come, then turned around once more and started all over again.

?I?ve been round three times already and I won?t go home until everybody else does,? said Zhang Chong, a young clothes vendor, his cheek decorated with a Chinese flag decal.

?We didn?t lose the Diaoyu islands in Mao Zedong?s time and we will not allow them to be lost by our generation,? Mr. Zhang said, explaining why he had taken to the streets.

The worst outbreak of anti-Japanese sentiment for many years was sparked last week when the Japanese government bought three of the uninhabited islands in the East China Sea known here as the Diaoyu and in Japan as the Senkaku. China claims sovereignty over the islands, which are under Japanese control and were privately owned until last week.

The Chinese government responded by fiercely denouncing the purchase, formally specifying the geographical coordinates of the waters that it claims around the islands, sending surveillance vessels to the islands and sanctioning anti-Japanese demonstrations around the country, some of which torched Japanese-owned businesses on Saturday.

Nothing like that was to be allowed on Tuesday, it was clear. As the protesters approached the Japanese embassy, a loudspeaker mounted on a police car played them a tape loop: ?The Chinese government shares the people?s feelings? a woman?s voice assured them. ?The government has made it clear it will not accept any territorial infringement. But once you have expressed yourself, please move on.?

Asian Gambling Boom Targets Filthy Rich | Gambling911.com

(Associated Press) - In the Philippines, a $4?billion casino will soon rise from reclaimed land on Manila Bay. In South Korea, foreign investors are expected to break ground next year on a clutch of casino resorts offshore. And on the eastern edge of Russia, authorities plan a resort zone aimed at drawing Chinese high-rollers.

The projects are part of a casino building boom rolling across Asia, where governments are trying to develop their tourism markets to capture increasingly affluent Asians with a penchant for gambling. They?re building glitzy, upscale Las Vegas-style resorts in a bid to copy the runaway success of Asian gambling hubs Macau, which rapidly became the world?s biggest casino market after ending a monopoly, and Singapore, where the city-state?s first two casinos raked in an estimated $6?billion a year after their 2010 openings.

The casino boom highlights how the gambling industry is being propelled by the region?s rapid economic growth, with millions entering the middle class thanks to rising incomes that allow them to spend more on travel and leisure pursuits. But it has also intensified debate over the social ills and perceived economic benefits of the gambling industry.

?Definitely, the success of Macau has set off a chain reaction in what is happening in the region,? said Francis Lui, vice chairman of Macau casino operator Galaxy Entertainment Group. ?After the success of Macau and Singapore, of course you see more countries now assessing the pros and cons of having gaming as a driving engine for bigger economic growth.?

?In the future the region is going to have more casinos.?

Mighty Macau

The fortunes to be made are immense. After Macau ended a four-decade monopoly and allowed in foreign operators such as Las Vegas Sands Corp., Wynn Resorts and MGM Resorts International, the former Portuguese colony on the southern edge of China quickly overtook the Las Vegas Strip as the world?s biggest gambling market. The foreign operators helped supercharge growth in Macau ? previously known for its aging, seedy, no-frills casinos ? by building flashy gambling palaces drawing wealthy mainland Chinese. Last year the city of just 500,000 people raked in $33.5 billion in gambling revenue.

In Singapore, the Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World Sentosa, which together cost more than $10?billion, have put the city on track to becoming the world?s second-biggest gambling market.

Doubling up

By 2015, consultants PricewaterhouseCoopers predict the surge in Asian casino revenues will have ?fundamentally reshaped the landscape of the global industry? and help Asia edge out the United States as the world?s biggest regional market.

PWC forecasts that the Asia-Pacific gambling market will more than double from $34.3 billion in 2010 to $79.3 billion in 2015, surpassing the United States, which is estimated to grow from $57.5 billion to $73.3 billion in the same period.

A number of projects planned or under way across the region are helping to fulfill that prediction.

Cambodian operator Nagacorp, which runs the only casino in the Southeast Asian city?s capital, Phnom Penh, plans to open a $369 million expansion including hotels and shopping later this year.

Vietnam will get its first casino-resort next year. Canadian company Asian Coast Development is set to open a five-star MGM-branded beachfront complex aimed at drawing foreign visitors.

Both countries bar their own citizens from entering casinos.

Even the neglected Russian Pacific port city of Vladivostok, perhaps best known as the eastern terminus for the Trans-Siberian Railway, plans to get in on the action. Authorities announced plans in May to invite foreign investors to help develop an entertainment zone with no less than 12 casinos aimed at attracting Chinese and other North Asian visitors.

Debate in Japan

In Japan, where legalization has been debated for years, lawmakers have been inching closer to approving casinos as a way to stimulate the economy and boost tourism. Not everyone is convinced it?s a gamble that will benefit Japan, which already allows gambling on horse, boat and bicycle racing as well as slots.

?If we get casinos in Japan, that will destroy the nation,? said Ken Wakamiya, an author and anti-gambling activist. He pointed out that pachinko, a slot machine-like game, is one of the country?s most popular forms of gambling. But he said it?s played widely by poor people and as a result made them even poorer.

?Introducing casinos is a plan to rip off our own people. It is an act of madness,? he said.

A similar debate has played out in Taiwan, which will get its first casino after residents on the island of Matsu voted in favor in July. Casinos are banned in Taiwan except on outlying islands, where approval in a referendum is needed.

Some countries are looking to Singapore as a model. Singapore, which authorized two big casino-resorts as part of an effort turn itself into a gambling and tourism magnet, is tightening what are already some of the strictest measures in Asia to control organized crime and gambling addiction.

Junket operators ? middlemen who bring in wealthy high-rollers but which have also been linked to organized crime ? are almost completely banned. Regulators also plan a big hike in the amount casino operators can be fined for breaking regulations that include charging locals 100 Singapore dollars ($81) a day to enter. The government also expanded a program banning people who are bankrupt or receiving welfare from entering casinos, raising the number to 43,000.

Despite the measures, more low income players are betting bigger amounts, according to a 2011 survey by the National Council on Problem Gambling, while the Samaritans counseling hotline reports an increasing number of calls involving problem gambling.

In the Philippines, church leaders have spoken out against a $4?billion project that the government hopes will turn a site on Manila Bay into the country?s version of the Las Vegas Strip. Casinos have been legal since 1977 but many are small and run-down.

Foreign investors including Macau?s Melco Crown Entertainment, Japanese pachinko tycoon Kazuo Okada?s Universal Entertainment and Malaysia?s Genting Bhd. are working separately with local partners on the project, which will include hotels, restaurants, museums, a marina and boardwalk and a monorail.

The project, dubbed Entertainment City, is aimed at drawing wealthy foreign gamblers, but church leaders say it would promote ?a culture of gambling? in the conservative, majority Roman Catholic Philippines.

Gambling ?foments addiction, foments indolence, foments a mentality of chance and it destroys families,? said Retired Archbishop Oscar Cruz.

In South Korea, Universal and two other companies plan to build resorts in a special economic zone near Incheon Airport on Yeongjong Island. The companies, which also include Caesar?s Entertainment of the United States and South Korea?s Paradise Group, are scheduled to break ground in September 2013, said Lee Woo-hyung, director of tourism and culture department at the Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority.

The Beijing factor

Some are skeptical that the projects can rival the profits made in Macau, which has benefited from a seemingly endless stream of mainland Chinese gamblers.

Beijing has been happy to let its wealthy gamble their fortunes away in Macau, a special administrative region of China. But it might start clamping down on exit permissions to prevent citizens from boosting a regional rival?s gambling tax coffers if geopolitical tensions flare.

That risk is most acute in the Philippines, which has sparred with Beijing over a disputed shoal, said Grant Govertsen, managing partner of Union Gaming Research Macau.

?You?re entirely dependent on the good graces of Beijing to be successful,? Govertsen said. ?And I don?t like those odds.?

The days of Canadian asbestos exports appear to be numbered, and anti-asbestos activists couldn?t be happier.

George St-Pierre wants to finish fights, study dinosaurs and eat McDonalds

UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre has recently been given the green light to start training for his Nov. 17 fight with interim champ Carlos Condit. In an interview with the Toronto Sun, GSP said he wants to finish fights because of the criticism he takes for going to decision, as he did in his last four fights.

Saying he wants to be more "opportunistic," GSP said he is fighting the world's best.

"I can make up a bunch of excuses but the truth is I'm fighting the best guys all the time and it's tough competition. You cannot always win by beautiful fashion. The guy that is in front of me is a very good guy. He's the No. 1 contender all the time and now I'm fighting the (interim) world champ in Carlos Condit. I'm working a lot more on being more opportunistic and it's going to pay off I'm sure."

With a record of 22-2 and six title defenses, GSP has proven himself one of the best fighters to ever grace the Octagon, but the lack of recent finishes nags at the idea he is the very best. A finish over Condit could silence those worries.

GSP also talked about a few other, non-fight-related items. He said if he wasn't a fighter, he would be a paleontologist or archaeologist. And his favorite splurge food?

I like McDonald's. Three cheeseburgers, French fries, poutine with chicken McNuggets and a big Coca-Cola.

Whoa. The man with washboard abs loves a meal with enough calories to last him two days.

Muhammad Ali to receive Liberty Medal on Thursday

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Retired boxing great Muhammad Ali will visit Philadelphia to receive the Liberty Medal, an award recognizing his longtime role as a fighter outside the ring for humanitarian causes, civil rights and religious freedom.

The honor will be presented on Thursday during a ceremony at the National Constitution Center by the champ's daughter, who is also a boxer, and two U.S. Olympic athletes. It comes with a $100,000 cash prize.

"Ali embodies the spirit of the Liberty Medal by embracing the ideals of the Constitution ? freedom, self-governance, equality and empowerment ? and helping to spread them across the globe," former President Bill Clinton, the center's chairman, said in a statement.

Since hanging up his gloves in 1981, Ali has traveled extensively on international charitable missions and devoted his time to philanthropy and social causes.

His wife Lonnie is slated to speak on his behalf at the ceremony. A 30-year battle with Parkinson's disease has devastated the once-chiseled physique that made Ali an Olympic champion and three-time heavyweight title holder.

Other scheduled attendees include Joe Louis Barrow II, son of boxer Joe Louis; actor Terrence Howard, who played Ali in an ABC-TV biography; singer Roberta Flack, who will perform; and former basketball star Dikembe Mutombo, a Constitution Center board member and Congo native who said he was inspired by Ali's 1974 visit to that country for the famous "Rumble in the Jungle."

Ali's daughter Laila will join Claressa Shields and Susan Francia in bestowing the Liberty Medal. Last month, the 17-year-old Shields became the first U.S. woman to win Olympic gold in boxing. Francia is a two-time rowing gold medalist from nearby Abington, Pa.

Ali was born Cassius Clay but changed his name after converting to Islam in the 1960s. He refused to serve in the Vietnam War because of his religious beliefs and was stripped of his heavyweight crown in 1967. A U.S. Supreme Court ruling later cleared him of a draft-evasion conviction; he regained the boxing title in 1974 and again 1978.

Ali received the Presidential Medal of Freedom ? the nation's highest civilian honor ? in 2005. He has also established the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Research Center in Phoenix and a namesake educational and cultural institute in his hometown of Louisville, Ky.

The National Constitution Center, which opened in 2003, is dedicated to increasing public understanding of the Constitution and the ideas and values it represents. It awards the Liberty Medal annually to an individual who displays courage and conviction while striving to secure freedom for people around the world.

Previous recipients include rock singer and human rights activist Bono, former South African President Nelson Mandela and former President Jimmy Carter. Six winners later received the Nobel Peace Prize.

iPhone 5 hands-on: Slim is in

Featured

14 hrs.

While the iPhone 5 rumors were popping, I couldn't help think this was just some kind of stretched out iPhone 4S. During the keynote presentation, I was impressed by the features but couldn't help continuing on this path: Would it just be the same??

Well, when I finally got the thing in my hand, even for a few minutes,?I was delighted to discover how different it is.

Yes, the iPhone 5 is thinner and lighter than the iPhone 4S, but not in a plasticky way that would suggest some of Samsung's smartphones. If the iPhone 4S represents the?heft and?machined precision of a handgun, the iPhone 5 has the impossible physique of a laser blaster. It's light and thin in the way that the future should be.

The matte finish on the smartphone's back is a blessing and a curse. I like that there's a lot less glass here for me to shatter, but the way it looks takes away from the pure elegance of the iPhone 4 design: Two panes of shiny glass, separated by a steel border. I find that the white iPhone 5 (above) looks a little washed out, less bold, where the black version (below)?is smarter, if perhaps more masculine than its predecessor.

The taller screen is not as gangly as I has thought, and when I saw a clip of "The?Avengers" on it, I could appreciate why the design decision was made. Movies aren't my No. 1 activity on my phone, but the 16x9 ratio is a major standard for movies and more, so it just makes sense.

There's a springiness to the phone's?interface that suggests the stomping A6 processor, but I couldn't load up anything that let me really see the polygons fly. Also, part of that smoother operation could be iOS 6, because much of it?? for instance, the Music app?? has been retooled to better interact with iCloud and iTunes.

What was a fun thing to test out, even if I never use it in real life, is the camera's?Panorama feature: You just hoist the phone aloft and pan across your field of view, and you end up with a seamless panoramic image, suitable for framing (if you're any good at photography, that is ? alas, I am not).

(AP) ? Republican challenger Mitt Romney sought to portray President Barack Obama as weak on foreign policy Wednesday after violent attacks on U.S. diplomatic missions in the Middle East. Obama steered clear of the political fight, declaring as commander in chief that "justice will be done" in response to the deaths of four Americans in Libya.

Romney used the attacks as an opening to assail Obama during an appearance in swing state Florida, accusing the administration of sending "mixed signals to the world" and failing to lead in the face of violence.

Obama avoided engaging his campaign rival during an appearance in the White House Rose Garden with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. Addressing the nation and the world, he said there was "absolutely no justification for this kind of senseless violence ? none." He was responding to the Tuesday night attack that killed U.S. ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and three American members of his staff.

Romney had jumped to criticize Obama as the attacks were being waged on U.S. diplomatic missions in Egypt and Libya. Angry mobs attacked the facilities to protest an obscure film by a California filmmaker that ridiculed Islam's Prophet Muhammad.

The U.S. Embassy in Cairo initially issued a statement that criticized the film. Romney, trailing Obama in public opinion polls on their leadership on foreign policy, quickly pounced with a statement before news of the diplomats' deaths, saying the administration's response seemed to "sympathize with those who waged the attacks."

As news of the deaths came from the White House Wednesday morning, the Romney team scrambled to change a speech before supporters in his Jacksonville, Fla., campaign headquarters to a more somber event. The supporters were ushered from the room and four flags were set up behind the podium from which Romney read a brief statement mentioning Egypt and contending that Obama is a weak leader. He then invited questions from reporters, who asked if it was an appropriate tone to take given the deaths and that the White House said it disagreed with the embassy statement. Romney stood firm.

"The president takes responsibility not just for the words that come from his mouth, but also for the words that come from his ambassadors, from his administration, from his embassies, from his State Department," Romney said. "They clearly sent mixed messages to the world. The statement that came from the administration ? and the embassy is the administration ? the statement that came from the administration was a statement which is akin to apology. And I think was a severe miscalculation."

Obama did not mention Romney and instead focused on the diplomats who were lost. He ignored reporters' shouted questions asking him to respond to Romney, keeping himself out of the fray and leaving the job to other Democrats.

"Gov. Romney's comments are about as inappropriate as anything I have ever seen at this kind of a moment," said Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry. "They are flat wrong, but they demonstrate an insensitivity and a lack of judgment about what is happening right now. To make those kinds of statements before you even know the facts, before families have even been notified, before things have played out, is really not just inexperienced, it's irresponsible, it's callous, it's reckless. And I think he ought to apologize, and I don't think he knows what he's talking about, frankly."

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., suggested Romney has a pattern in mishandling international affairs, comparing his "inappropriate" response to the tragedy to his questioning of British security measures for the Olympics, which angered officials in London.

"There comes a time when you've got to use some judgment, whether you're speaking to the British about the Olympics or you're reacting to the death of the ambassador in Libya," Durbin said in an interview after emerging from a classified briefing on Syria and Iran. "You've got to have a little prudence and a little common sense, not make the situation worse."

None of the senior Republicans in Congress joined in Romney's criticism of the administration, even though they all issued statements mourning the deaths of those killed in Libya. Aides to Senate Republic leader Mitch McConnell, House Speaker John Boehner and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said they had nothing to add.

The Mideast attacks pivoted the election to foreign policy, an area where the president who commanded the mission that killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden has a lead in polling even though Republicans traditionally have an edge.

"The attacks in Libya and Egypt underscore that the world remains a dangerous place and that American leadership is still sorely needed," Romney said Wednesday. "In the face of this violence, America cannot shrink from the responsibility to lead. American leadership is necessary to ensure that events in the region don't spin out of control. We cannot hesitate to use our influence in the region to support those who share our values and our interests.

"As I've watched over the past three and a half years, the president has had some successes. He's had some failures," Romney said. "It's a hit-or-miss approach, but it has not been based upon sound foreign policy."

Obama was more cautious in responding to the attacks as the situation evolved. The White House says Obama was informed of the Libya attacks Tuesday afternoon during his weekly meeting with Pentagon leaders and told later in the evening that Stevens was unaccounted for. Obama learned of the ambassador's death Wednesday morning, the White House said.

On Capitol Hill, where flags were lowered to half-staff, Republicans mostly steered clear of the political criticism that Romney leveled at Obama over foreign policy, focusing on the lives lost in the Egyptian and Libyan attacks and imploring the two governments to condemn the incidents and protect American diplomatic missions.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said Americans "will stand united in our response."

"Among the things we can all agree on in Washington is that attacks on the U.S. and its representatives will be met with resolve, and that America's presence and defense of our national interests across the globe will not be deterred by the acts of violent extremists," he said.

Romney's running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, said at an appearance in his home state of Wisconsin that in the face of such violence "we are reminded that the world needs American leadership and the best guarantee of peace is American strength."

"We face a big decision in this country," Ryan said. "The decisions we make are profound, and they will last not just for four years but for a generation."

Apple's iPhone 5 bigger, faster but lacks 'wow'

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Inc's new iPhone goes on sale on Friday with a bigger screen and 4G wireless technology, as the company seeks to safeguard its edge over rivals like Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and Google Inc.

The iPhone 5 fulfilled many of the expectations laid out by gadget geeks and technology analysts ahead of its Wednesday unveiling but offered few surprises to give Apple shares -- already near record highs -- another major kick.

"There is not a wow factor because everything you saw today is evolutionary. I do think they did enough to satisfy," said Michael Yoshikami, chief executive of wealth management company Destination Wealth Management.

Other industry analysts speculated about what else was in Apple's product pipeline ahead of the crucial year-end holiday season, especially since the company stayed mum about an oft-rumored TV device or a smaller iPad.

The consumer electronics giant that in 2010 popularized tablet computing with the iPad has given no hints on whether it plans a smaller version to match cheaper tablets from the likes of Google or Amazon.com Inc.

"We would really like to see the iPad Mini in the product offering for the all-important holiday quarter. They still have time," said Channing Smith, co-manager of the Capital Advisors Growth Fund. "As soon as we see that, we will have more conviction about the stock heading into the final quarter."

Apple shares ended the day up 1.4 percent at $669.79.

The latest iPhone comes as Apple faces competition beyond current key competitors Samsung and Google. Late entrant Microsoft Corp is now trying to push its Windows Phone 8 operating system as an alternative to Apple and Android, the most-used smartphone operating system in the world.

Analysts have forecast sales of 10 million to 12 million of the new iPhones in this month alone.

Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook kicked off the event in San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center but it was marketing chief Phil Schiller who introduced the iPhone 5 and took the audience through the new phone's features.

The iPhone 5 sports a 4-inch "retina" display, can surf a high-speed 4G LTE wireless network, and is 20 percent lighter than the previous iPhone 4S.

CEDING A LEAD

It ships September 21 in the United States, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and Britain. It will hit 100 countries by year's end in the fastest international rollout for an iPhone so far.

The stakes are high with the iPhone, Apple's marque product, accounting for nearly half its revenue. The California company has sold more than 243 million iPhones since 2007, when the device ushered in the current applications ecosystem model.

But Samsung now leads the smartphone market with a 32.6 percent share followed by Apple with 17 percent, according to market research firm IDC. Both saw shipments rise compared to a year ago, with Samsung riding its flagship Galaxy S III phone.

Available for pre-order on Friday starting from $199 with a data plan, the iPhone 5 comes with Apple's newest "A6" processor, which executives said runs twice as fast as the previous generation. It will pack three microphones -- enhancing built-in voice assistant Siri -- and an 8 megapixel camera that can take panoramic views.

It will hitch a ride on the three largest U.S. carriers: Verizon Wireless, AT&T Inc, and Sprint.

One popular enhancement was improved battery endurance -- the iPhone 5 can support eight hours of 4G Web browsing, the company said.

While Apple played catch-up on many of the new phone's features -- Samsung and Google's Motorola already have larger and 4G-ready phones -- analysts say the device's attraction is the way its software and hardware work in tandem.

"Where they are pushing the envelope, and where they remain the one to beat, is on the experience those features bring to the consumer," said Carolina Milanesi, Gartner Research analyst. "While other vendors continue to focus just on the hardware -- delivering the speeds and feeds and bigger batteries -- Apple focuses on pulling the operating system, the hardware and what you can consume on the hardware."

FOO FIGHTERS ROCK

Cook began the event by giving updated metrics on the company's products and then quickly gave up the stage for Schiller to introduce the iPhone 5.

The team then moved on to a new lineup of iPods, a redesigned iTunes store and ended with a surprise performance by rock band Foo Fighters. Apple executives in the front row could be seen rocking their heads to "Times Like These" and other hits.

For the iPhone 5, Apple has done away with the connectors used on previous devices and replaced them with a smaller and more efficient "Lightning" connector.

With the iPhone, it is shipping new "EarPods" audiophones, designed after digitally scanning hundreds of ears. Shares in Skullcandy, which specializes in stylized earphones, fell 4.5 percent on Wednesday.

Beyond hardware, Apple telegraphed many of the software changes to expect in iPhone 5 when it debuted iOS 6, its latest mobile operating system, in June.

Upgrades to the software include voice navigation for driving, a feature already available on many Android smartphones, as well as "Passbook" for storing electronic boarding passes, sports tickets and gift cards.

Siri has been improved. In an onstage demonstration, Siri was able to answer questions about the result of a recent pro football game and recite a list of movies playing around town, along with ratings.

Earlier, Cook told the audience that its apps store now has more than 700,000 on tap -- the industry's largest library.

"When you look at each of these, they are incredible industry-leading innovations by themselves. But what sets them apart, and what places Apple way out in front of the competition, is how they work so well together," Cook said toward the end of the two-hour presentation.

Mars rock hound: Rover Curiosity prepares to head for unique formation

The Mars rover Curiosity is about to head for?Glenelg, a unique confluence of rock formations. It's only a quarter-mile away, but the trip could take weeks as the chemistry lab on wheels examines the terrain.

All in 37 sols' work for the Mini Cooper-sized chemistry lab on wheels whose mission is to help scientists determine if this patch of the red planet has ever had an environment hospitable to life. (A sol is one day on Mars ? 40 minutes longer than on earth.)

So far, the rover has undergone one hardware test after another to ensure all of the instruments are working and the rover's seven-foot long robotic arm works as advertised. That phase comes to an end Friday evening Earth time, when the rover finally strikes out for Glenelg, a unique confluence of rock formations a quarter of a mile away, according to Jennifer Trosper, Curiosity's mission manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

RELATED:?Are you scientifically literate? Take our quiz!

If Curiosity was to make the trip without rock stops along the way it would reach Glenelg in less than two weeks.?But now that engineers are about to share the keys to the rover with the science team, researchers are eager to put tools on the science turret at the end of Curiosity's arm to use along the way.

The first object researchers are hunting for is a hefty chunk of basalt, rock born of volcanic activity and widespread on Mars. The goal is to use ChemCam, a laser-based device for imaging rocks and gathering data on its composition, and an alpha-particle x-ray spectrometer, in tandem to analyze the rock. ChemCam sits atop Curiosity's mast. In addition, the turret's stand-in for a geologist's hand lens also will be brought to bear on the rock.

Once the rover's testing phase ends Thursday, "we will drive until the science team finds that rock," Ms. Trosper says. After a few weeks at the rock, "we will continue to drive to another location, hopefully a sandy location, where we can begin to scoop."

The pause time there could run another few weeks each, she suggests.

The overall verdict on Curiosity's performance to date? "So far, outstanding," Trosper says.

One measure of the progress made in operating rovers on Mars ? from Sojourner Truth in the late 1990s to Spirit and Opportunity, and now to Curiosity ? is the amount of time consumed by days where the teams didn't meet their objectives. With Sojourner Truth, the first rover to land on Mars, one day out of three was lost to glitches of one kind or another, she says. With the long-lived rovers Spirit and Opportunity, the number fell to one day out of 10. With Curiosity, so far it's one day out of 36.

That may bode well for future rover missions. Aside from the science it performs, Curiosity also is designed to serve as a platform for future long-distance rover missions, where only the instruments change to meet a new mission's science objectives. NASA Mars program officials have said that while it's possible to envision missions that would require a rover smaller than Curiosity, they don't foresee a need for a rover larger than Curiosity.

Apple Search Engine Reveals Product News Before Today?s Event: iPhone 5, New iPods, New iTunes Confirmed

apple-store-search-engineApple's search engine is mistakenly revealing the details of today's Apple news announcements in advance of today's press event where it's been expected Apple will announce new iPhones. As spotted first by the folks at 9to5, a?search for "iPhone-5"?on Apple?s website indicates that is, indeed, what's happening today. And yep, it looks like they're calling it the iPhone 5, not "the new iPhone." We've also found a link that indicates a new version of iTunes is being announced as well, again confirming rumors.

China factory growth slips, government spending eyed

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's factories ran at their slowest rate for 39 months in August while a double-digit rise in fixed asset investment showed that infrastructure spending remained key to economic growth.

Industrial output growth slowed to 8.9 percent year on year, the weakest since May 2009 and below market forecasts of a 9.1 percent rise, data from China's National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed on Sunday.

Fixed asset investment, which accounted for half of China's net economic growth in the first-half of 2012, grew 20.2 percent between January and August compared to the year earlier period, a touch below expectations for a 20.4 percent expansion.

Retail sales rose 13.2 percent last month from a year ago, in line with forecasts in a Reuters poll, though the trend of spending so far in 2012 has been tracking slightly lower.

The data is likely to reinforce market expectations that China will further adjust policies soon to lift an economy mired in its softest period of growth in three years.

"The headline numbers do not look very good and they suggest a pretty challenging outlook for policymakers," Zhang Zhiwei, chief China economist at Nomura in Hong Kong said.

China's vast factory sector has been badly hit by slowing new orders. Surveys of purchasing managers earlier this month showed concerns growing about new business, suggesting that manufacturers will run inventories down further before they can begin to turn production up again.

Data earlier on Sunday showed the annual rate of consumer inflation ticked up to 2.0 percent in August from July's 30-month low of 1.8 percent, suggesting that room to ease monetary policy to shore up growth may be narrowing.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast inflation to pick up to 2.0 percent in August, but month-on-month inflation was a touch ahead of forecasts, up 0.6 percent in August versus July. Analysts had anticipated a rise of 0.5 percent.

"Inflation is coming back quickly. Together with rising home prices, it will limit the scope for further policy relaxation," said Dong Xian'an, economist with Peking First Advisory.

STICKY FOOD INFLATION

Food prices have eased sharply in 2012, but are still running at an annual rate of 5.9 percent so far - sticking above the government's overall inflation target of 4 percent.

That is especially pertinent to policymaking as most household income in China is spent on basic necessities. Average annual urban disposable income was 21,810 yuan ($3,500) in 2011.

China's economic growth has slowed for six straight quarters and analysts expect the trend to extend to a seventh when third quarter GDP data for 2012 is published. Growth in Q2 was 7.6 percent, its slackest in more than three years.

Recent data have cemented views that growth for the full year will be its lowest since 1999 and may fall below 8 percent.

Separately, the NBS said China's producer price index dropped 3.5 percent in August from a year earlier, which compared to forecasts for a 3.3 percent decline.

It marked the sixth straight month of producer price deflation, putting a further squeeze on corporate profits already dampened by a drop-off in demand at home and abroad courtesy of global economic headwinds stemming from Europe's sovereign debt crisis.

Investors widely expect the central bank to ease monetary conditions further as part of the government's campaign of "policy fine-tuning" unveiled in the autumn of 2011.

The People's Bank of China has cut interest rates twice since June and trimmed banks' required reserve ratios (RRR) in three 50 basis point steps since last November that has freed an estimated 1.2 trillion yuan ($190 billion) for new lending.

But a seeming recent preference for using money market operations over interest rates to boost liquidity conditions in the economy is seen as a sign of the policy dilemma facing a central bank and a government super hawkish on inflation and wary of aggressive rate cuts.

Officials last week revealed they had given the green light to 60 infrastructure projects worth more than $150 billion, as Beijing seeks to energise the economy. The announcement fuelled investor hopes the world's growth engine may get a lift in the fourth quarter of the year and beyond.

The approvals are roughly a quarter of the total size of the massive stimulus package unleashed in response to the global financial crisis in 2008. Fixed asset investment contributed 3.9 percentage points China's 7.6 Q2 growth.

Chinese President Hu Jintao urged Asia-Pacific nations on Saturday to speed up infrastructure development to help face the "grave challenges" from the global economy.

Qiu Xiaohua, former head of the National Bureau of Statistics and now a senior researcher with the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), told a forum in the city of Xiamen on Sunday that the government still had room to act to bolster growth - and urged it to do so.

"I think the government should accelerate the pace and further increase the strength of policy fine-tuning to give a lift to the economy," Qiu said, adding that he expected Q3 GDP growth to slow to 7.4 percent or less.
