You Can Explore the Ghost Island That Inspired Skyfall on Street View

If this view looks familiar, it's because it was the inspiration for the Javier Bardem's cyberterrorist HQ in Skyfall. Now, you can explore the real-life island on Street View.

While none of the Bond movie was actually filmed on the island, found just off Japan's Nagasaki Peninsula, it's certainly clear that the researchers spent some time there. Hashima, sometimes referred to as Gunkanjima ("Battleship Island"), was once home to 5,000 people?but was abandoned in 1974 when its coal industry failed. It took Google just two hours to map the place, and now you can waste a couple of minutes looking around it. [Google (Japanese) via Engadget]
