Health And Fitness Tips For Men And Women | New Health and ...

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

Fitness means much more than working out at a gym. Educate yourself on how to live a healthy lifestyle and stick to your fitness routine. It takes patience and persistence to achieve results, so stick to your routine so you can achieve your fitness goals. Follow the tips below to help you enhance your fitness plan.

Your core supports your whole body and needs to be strong. When your core is strong, it will be easier to do all other activities. To build a stronger core, focus on doing sit-ups. Doing sit ups can also increase the range of motion you experience. This encourages your abs to become stronger.

Lat pulldowns and pullups should not be done with your thumb wrapped around the bar. It is much better to keep your thumb next to your index finger. Not wrapping your thumbs enables you to isolate the lat muscles instead of involving the muscles in your arm. Although it may feel weird, it will assist you in targeting the correct muscles.

Are you aware that PlayStation, XBOX, and Wii can get you into shape? Video games, such as Dance Dance Revolution and Wii Fit, give you an excellent opportunity to get up and moving.

Contact skills are an essential thing to develop for volleyball. One of the best ways, surprisingly, is by playing the game foosball. Foosball is a sport that requires special hand-eye coordination to succeed. While you are playing a fun game of Foosball, you?re also building useful skills for playing volleyball.

Find ways to reward yourself for your efforts. Make sure you set short term goals in which you reward yourself, as you will feel that sense of achievement. This is a great motivational factor and helps you achieve your ultimate goal.

Have great contact skills when playing volleyball. Playing foosball is a great way to accomplish this. Foosball requires keen skills to win against an opponent; more specifically great hand-eye coordination. These skills can be mastered and tailored for volleyball too.

Everyone can work on getting fit, however, those who are really serious about it will perfect their techniques whenever needed. With your new wealth of fitness knowledge, you will be better able to create a plan to help you achieve your goals.

(AP) ? People jumped off tall buildings all around the country Wednesday, but no one got hurt.

It was all part of a "leap day" promotion for an energy drink.

In Atlantic City, two parachutists jumped off the top of The Water Club, the 43-story luxury hotel next to the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, landing safely in the parking lot.

"That was awesome!" exclaimed Jeff Provenzano as his feet hit the ground in the parking lot, his chute still billowing above him in the stiff wind. "There was a burst of wind; 450 feet! It was awesome!"

Provenzano, 35, from Arizona City, Ariz., was the first off the roof. He said he's made about 200 such jumps around the country.

"Right before you start off, the nerves start to get to you a little bit," he said. "Once you take the first step, you know you're committed. And when you're in the air and the chute comes out, all the fear is gone and then it's just exhilaration."

Taking three quick steps toward the edge, he hurled himself over the side, plunging straight down for a second or two until he pulled the rip cord on his parachute and it snapped out behind him, slowing his descent and bringing a smile of relief to his face.

Similar jumps were planned in Miami, from the 36-story Conrad Hotel; Detroit, from the top of the 73-story General Motors headquarters at the Renaissance Center, and Las Vegas, from the 43-story Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino.

2012 Oscars: Best And Worst Speeches

Meryl Streep and Jean Dujardin won us over, while Bret McKenzie made a critical omission during his acceptance.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Meryl Streep wins at the 84th annual Academy Awards
Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images

One of the most essential parts of any Oscar night is the speeches. If you win, your job is only halfway done. Now you have to get up onstage in front of a billion people and practice your public speaking.

Some are heartfelt, some are funny, and some will go down in history — for better or worse. With so much of the ceremony dedicated to acceptance speeches, it's important to look back and decide who owned the night and who fell on their face.

Here are our best and worst speeches of the 2012 Academy Awards:

Best
Octavia Spencer for Best Supporting Actress
For as predictable as Spencer's win for Best Supporting Actress was, her speech ended the long road to Oscar night in style. She went with the time-tested acceptance-speech traditions of emotion and honesty. Plus, she thanked the state of Alabama, the only state to get a shout-out during the night.

Meryl Streep for Best Actress
It came as a big surprise, and no one knew that better than Streep. Her "whatever" attitude almost had us forget the upset win over Viola Davis. It may not have been the most just outcome, but at the very least we got a funny speech instead.

Christopher Plummer for Best Supporting Actor
As the oldest person to ever win an acting Oscar, Plummer outdid most everyone younger than him and delivered one of the most memorable speeches of the night. It was class all the way for Plummer, who sincerely thanked his wife, daughter and co-star Ewan McGregor. He joked that, in his mother's womb, "I was already rehearsing my Academy acceptance speech, but it was so long ago, mercifully for you, I've forgotten it."

Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash for Best Adapted Screenplay
You have to admit that Angelina Jolie was standing a little oddly, with her right leg out of the high slit in her dress, as she read the names of the nominees. Jim Rash, known for his role on "Community," also took note and mimicked the strange posture after he won the award for his work on the "Descendants" screenplay.

Jean Dujardin for Best Actor
A good way to score points as a Frenchman winning an Academy Award in America is to open your speech with, "I love your country!" Dujardin read the rest of his speech to help with his English, but it was the outburst in French at the end of his acceptance that really won us over.

Worst
Bret McKenzie for Best Song
Listen, Bret. We love you, and we're so happy you won. But there would be no Muppets movie without Jason Segel. He may not have written any of the songs, but he co-wrote the film, put his name on the line and sang "Man or Muppet," the winning song. At the very least, you should have given the man a simple "thanks."

Kirk Baxter and Angus Wall for Best Editing
It's understandable that you were caught off guard — "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" didn't get a whole lot of nominations — but you need to be a little more prepared than you were. You're still expected to give a speech. You won just a year ago, so you have enough experience with this kind of thing.

Mark Coulier and J. Roy Helland for Best Makeup
It's OK if you write your speech down before you head onto the stage to accept your award. It's even OK if you read your speech directly from the cards you wrote them on. But please make sure that the speech is a good one if you're going to do so.

Angelina Jolie Oscars Imitator Explains 'Loving Tribute' To Actress' Leg

'I had just seen her pose and thought it was bold and fun,' 'Descendants' co-writer Jim Rash explains of his Oscars joke.
By Jocelyn Vena

On Sunday night at the 2012 Oscars, "The Descendants" co-writer Jim Rash hit the stage with Alexander Payne and Nat Faxon to accept the award for Best Adapted Screenplay. They were handed their prize by Angelina Jolie, who had just turned heads in her breathtaking Versace black velvet gown, which featured one very sexy slit. To emphasize the look, Jolie had popped out her right leg; the move prompted a Twitter account made in the leg's honor and Rash's funny onstage parody of it, right next to Jolie.

Shortly after Rash imitated her stance at the show, he was asked what had moved him to do it. He laughed off the moment, telling The Hollywood Reporter, "I had just seen her pose and thought it was bold and fun. And you know what? We have exactly the same legs!

Really, it was a loving tribute and nothing but."

Faxon, who also sort of got in on the joke with his leg, said, "Angelina's supremely hot. There's no way to do anything but honor her."

Rash also spoke to EW.com about the moment, noting that he had decided to go there when producers told nominees that when multiple people accepted an award, only one person could give a speech.

"Honestly, as soon as I saw her pose like that, I was like, 'I'm going to do that,' " said the writer, who also plays Dean Pelton on "Community." "I knew Alexander was going to take the reins, so I was like, 'How can I make a moment?' — selfishly. I almost thought it was a little Dean Pelton, somehow. I was bringing it all together. Because I have stood like that [on 'Community']."

As of press time, the Twitter account (under the handle "Angies Right Leg") made in that leg's honor had yet to comment on the moment, but sure had plenty to say about its own glory over the course of 18 tweets. One of the final tweets simply noted, "You have to admit I'm one hell of a leg."

More than 80,000 Syrian refugees fleeing to Jordan

(AP) ? More than 80,000 Syrian refugees have fled the nearly 11 months of violence in their homeland and settled in neighboring Jordan, a Jordanian government official said Sunday.

The skyrocketing number of refugees, which was significantly higher figures than previously reported by the Jordanian government, attests to the growing violence in Syria where President Bashar Assad is trying to suppress a months-long rebellion by Syrians demanding he step down.

Jordanian Information Minister Rakan al-Majali said Sunday that 73,000 refugees have entered the country from Syria across Jordan's northern border. The figure comprises only those refugees who have crossed legally.

Last week, the interior ministry said at least 10,000 Syrians, including officers in the security forces, had entered Jordan illegally since the uprising began, bringing the total number of refugees in the country to roughly 83,000.

The refugees fleeing the crackdown by Assad receive considerable help in Jordan. Many are housed in apartments and some are hosted by Jordanian families and receive assistance from the government, private groups and the U.N.'s refugee agency.

Zaid Hamad, president of the Kitab and Sunna charity, one of the officially recognized aid groups assisting Syrians with housing, food and medical help, said the government's figures were accurate and predicted the numbers would grow.

Hamad said his organization alone is helping at least 20,000 Syrians in the country.

"I believe that within a month that number will continue to grow because we are receiving at least 40 refugees daily," he said.

Aid groups said that as violence deepens in Syria, they expect refugee numbers to climb.

Hamad spoke to The Associated Press as Syrians lined the group's office in the northern town of Ramtha, where they collected food boxes donated by the United Arab Emirates Red Crescent.

Hamid al-Shamisi of the UAE Red Crescent was on hand to distribute 550 boxes of rice, oil, sugar, tea, and other basic food items.

"We are brothers, and it's our duty to help," al-Shamisi told an elderly Syrian man.

One of the women in line, who identified herself only as Um Ahmed, said she had recently fled the city of Homs. The city in central Syria has witnessed a relentless bloody bombardment for more than three weeks.

"We had to escape from the brutal government attack on our city," she said on Friday. "The Assad regime is despicable. There is no safety for us and our children," said the mother of two.

Both Jordanian and U.N. officials said they have prepared a tent camp to house 1,000 Syrian families, should there be a massive influx of Syrian refugees. But so far, most of the refugees appear to be staying in private houses, with family or friends.

The kingdom is estimated to have hosted 1.5 million Iraqis during the height of the country's violence in 2003-2008. The refugees were a huge tax on the country's resources, and many hundreds of thousands still remain in Jordan.

STORRS, Conn. (AP) ? Syracuse found another way to win Saturday night, and in the process secured the Big East regular-season championship.

Fab Melo's follow-up dunk with 31 seconds left lifted the second-ranked Orange to a 71-69 win over Connecticut. C.J. Fair blocked a shot by Roscoe Smith just before the buzzer to preserve the victory for Syracuse, which has won nine in a row since its only loss of the season Jan. 21 at Notre Dame.

Kris Joseph had 21 points to lead the Orange (29-1, 16-1 Big East).

Jeremy Lamb had 19 points, and Andre Drummond added 17 points and 14 rebounds for UConn (17-11, 7-9), which overcame a 17-point second-half deficit to tie the game with 47 seconds to go.

"This was a big character win, because we didn't have the momentum for the last 5 minutes and everything was going right for them," said Fair. "For us to come up with a win like this is big."

The win was the first for Syracuse at Gampel Pavilion, where the Orange had been 0-4.

Scoop Jardine made a layup with 9:55 left to give Syracuse a 60-49 lead, but Connecticut responded with a 14-3 run to tie it at 63 with 4:18 to go. Ryan Boatright started the spurt with a layup and Drummond finished it with a rebound basket and a fast-break layup.

The Orange led 69-65 with 2:12 remaining when Drummond got free for a dunk and then tipped in Boatright's miss to leave it tied again with 47 seconds left.

"We should have won that game," Drummond said. "We had a couple of tough plays down the stretch and they made their shots. At the end of the game, we didn't get the foul call that we were looking for."

Syracuse led 46-29 early in the second half after a 3-pointer by Joseph, but UConn began chipping away. A 3-point shot from Boatright cut that to single digits, and a behind-the-back pass from Shabazz Napier to Lamb led to a three-point play with 11:53 left that cut the deficit to 56-49.

Drummond followed Smith's miss with a layup that cut the lead to 63-61 and then took a pass from Napier from beyond halfcourt and tied the game with just more than 4 minutes left.

Melo's dunk off a miss by Fair gave Syracuse the winning margin despite protests from UConn's bench that Melo touched the ball while it was in the cylinder.

"The referees let us decide it, they let us play, they didn't call no touch fouls and it's just great to play in this conference," Joseph said.

Syracuse took control of the first half early. Joseph, who had 12 points before the break, went on his own 7-0 run to give Syracuse a 12-6 lead. The Orange extended that to 25-10 after a 13-0 run that was keyed when James Southerland blocked a flying dunk attempt by Drummond.

The Orange led 43-29 at halftime.

"We need to just improve on when you get a team down, keep 'em down," said Joseph.

The Orange beat the Huskies 85-67 in Syracuse two weeks ago, shooting a season-high 59 percent from the floor. They shot just under 44 percent in this one, and only 34.5 percent in the second half.

Syracuse has won five of the last six meetings between the teams.

Connecticut is 5-5 without coach Jim Calhoun this season, including a 3-4 mark during his current medical leave for spinal stenosis. The Hall of Fame coach also sat out the team's first three Big East games under an NCAA-imposed suspension stemming from recruiting violations.

Calhoun has surgery scheduled for Monday, but told The Associated Press that he is hoping he can recover enough to return to the bench in time for the season finale against Pittsburgh on March 3. The Huskies had won two of their last three games, but have just five wins since Jan. 1.

The Huskies came into the game rated No. 24 in the RPI and hoping a strong close to the season would be enough to give them an opportunity to defend their national championship in the NCAA tournament. The Huskies travel to Providence on Tuesday.

Boeheim earned his 885th victory, third on the career list and 15 ahead of Calhoun, who is in sixth place.

Former UConn star Rudy Gay had his name added to the "Huskies of Honor" wall before the game. Gay, who now plays for the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies, is the 18th former men's basketball player added to the wall, which pays tribute to the top players, coaches and contributors in UConn men's and women's basketball history.

We can't figure out which we like more: These new pictures or Kate's Sports Illustrated swimsuit cover. You know what, though? Why must one have to choose?

Just gaze upon the Michigan native's natural beauty, click to enlarge the Muse pics below, concentrate hard on not drooling too obviously, then thank us later:

Google reportedly (and unsurprisingly) picks Dennis Woodside to replace Sanjay Jha as Motorola Mobility CEO

Dennis Woodside

Google has selected Dennis Woodside to be the new CEO of Motorola Mobility, replacing Sanjay Jha, according to three people speaking to Blomberg. Woodside is a Google executive who led the company's ad business in North America before overseeing the Google/Motorola Mobility merger.

The deal was recently approved by both the European Commission and the U.S. Department of Justice, so it makes sense that these decisions are being made now.

From the beginning of the acquisition, Google has insisted that Motorola Mobility will remain an independent entity. Google and Motorola Mobility have yet to issue an official announcement.

Special Guest Post: Can You Be Friends With Your Agent? ? Nikole ...

by Janet Kobobel Grant

Founder and Literary Agent of Books & Such Agency

Some of my best friends are my clients. But not every client is a friend. Relationships between agents and clients are complex and hard to parse. I?ve learned a few principals in the fifteen years since I became an agent?sometimes the hard way.

Assumptions you should make:

  • The relationship is first and foremost a business relationship. When I sign to represent someone who already is a friend, I always establish that we are forming a business relationship. Unlike our friendship, that business relationship might end because it isn?t working for one or both of us on a professional level. If we don?t have the ability to see the difference between our profession and our mutual appreciation for each other, our friendship will end when the author-agent relationship ends. For that reason, I?m always hesitant to represent a friend. I value my friendships highly enough that I?m not eager to endanger them.

Several years ago I agreed to represent a dear friend. We embarked on the adventure with great anticipation. But, just as I was revving up my efforts to present her work to publishers, a major move and my husband?s health took up so much of my time and energy that I wasn?t able to devote myself to giving my new client the attention she deserved. After a few months, just as I was settling into the new realities of my life, my friend ended our professional relationship. I understood that I hadn?t served her well, but I had hoped she would extend grace to me. In this case, I was the unrealistic one. Our friendship was strained, and it took us a couple of years to get it back on course.

  • The author-agent relationship won?t necessarily turn into a friendship. While writers and their agents work closely and in synchronization with each other, friendship doesn?t have to be a part of the equation. My clients and I respect each other, that doesn?t mean we have to be friends.
  • If a friendship grows between you and your agent, it is a gift to both of you. As with all friendships, this one will take you by pleasant surprise. Not anticipating this side of the relationship as a foregone conclusion opens up both you and your agent to enjoy the delight of what is forming between you. As in any relationship, it can?t be forced by either of you.

Most of my client friendships developed slowly, as we worked together over the years. We learned about each other?s hobbies and families. But usually it is when life takes a turn that the friendship deepens. If one of us suffered an illness or one of us experienced a special joy?a birth or a wedding?we drew closer together.

One of my clients found herself in the hospital for a mysterious ailment and a worrisome prognosis. We talked on the phone every day, and soon she was phoning me whenever fear began to overtake her. By the time her hospital stay had ended, our friendship was cemented.

Assumptions you shouldn?t make:

  • Agents are looking for a friendship with every client. While I like all of my clients, not every one becomes a friend. We have made a business relationship; we didn?t sign an agreement to be friends. I feel uncomfortable when someone who wants to be a client bestows gifts on me every time we see each other and spontaneously sends me gifts. I feel as though the writer believes a bond is being formed, but I can?t allow myself to be obligated to represent someone. That relationship simply won?t work for either of us. I need to make the choice to represent someone because I can be an enthusiastic salesperson for his or her writing.
  • Agents will choose to represent you because you befriend them. I have many friends in the publishing industry, including authors who are represented by other agents. Friendship isn?t part of the equation for me when I decide to represent someone. As a matter of fact, sometimes I?ve become friends with clients, but the business side of our relationship didn?t work out. We?re still friends, and we?re both relieved our initial association resulted in kickstarting our friendship?and the friendship survived ending our business association.

The bottom line: Friendships and working relationships can intertwine, but they aren?t inherently connected.

Micah, Judah & Caleb: Living with Joy & Grief ? Dazed Dad

A few days ago, Caleb and I were having one of our moments. We were hanging out on the changing table (something that he really enjoys to do). He was staring out the window. I was gazing at him. And I probably even kissed him a few times.

I kept looking at him. Eventually his gaze caught mine, and we were looking at each other. He was making some of the insanely cute cooing sounds he?s recently been fond of doing?and the thought crossed my mind: ?How in the world did we get so lucky? How in the world were we blessed with such a beautiful and amazing little baby boy?? What did we do to ever deserve this precious baby??

And that?s when it hit me. The only reason Caleb is with us right now, the only reason we get to call this beautiful and amazing little baby our son?is because Micah and Judah died.

Had we been spared the agony and anguish of having two sons die just shy of 20 weeks?had we not had to go through losing our twin boys?we?d have two beautiful baby boys, but we never would have been able to meet Caleb. We would never know this amazing son of ours, this son whom we would give anything for now?

It can get you pretty messed up when you start thinking about it like that. Totally messes with your mind.

Falling in love with Caleb doesn?t mean that I love Micah and Judah any less?they will always be my first boys, my twin boys. But falling in love with Caleb means that I realize that he is only here because of the death of his brothers?

And I don?t even want to get into the theology of that?did God cause Micah and Judah to die, so that we could experience the love and beauty of Caleb? Was God just oblivious to our plight? Was God helpless and not able to ?step in? and save Micah and Judah? I?m just not going there..that could just mess with my head pretty bad.

And so?there it is. We sit with that reality. The reality of the loss of Micah & Judah. The reality of the amazing gift of Caleb. The paradox of loss and love. Of grief making room for joy; both forever with us.

Gay/Lesbian Fiction Excerpts: The Girls excerpt by Victor J Banis

If you have ever loved a dog, then you will love this story, The Girls by Victor J Banis, of Jenny--a self-assured self-taught spaniel--and Prima--a shy, mostly German Shepherd Dog with jackrabbit ears--who lived 15 happy years with the author. If you have ever doubted that dogs can love, then you didn't know the girls.

December 5, 2011)
ASIN: B006IV0EII

Excerpt:

If you?ve ever doubted that dogs can love, you never knew the girls.

Their names were Jenny and Prima, but everyone called them "the girls." They were lovers, of a sort; lesbians perforce, though I can't really say if their affectionate cuddling, nestling, licking and sometimes mounting ever produced any sort of orgasm. I can't actually even say if it really was sexual in nature. I do know that Prima would lie for hours in rapture, eyes closed, a dreamy smile on her face, while Jenny patiently cleaned her ears; and sometimes at night, I would hear noises?long, languorous sighs, a happy kind of panting that sounded suspiciously like girlish laughter?from the floor beside my bed, but I never peeked. Everyone is entitled, in my opinion.

Prima, painfully shy, was clearly the femme, a pretty, mostly-Shepherd mix with no pedigree but gracious manners. Jenny, a registered Springer who seemed quite aware of her superiority to the unregistered rest of us, was the aggressive member of our m?nage, an in-your-face sort, although she could be sweet and even demure when she chose.

They were bright and clever. Sometimes it seemed that they were cleverer than I. They did none of the usual doggish tricks, however. I am always astonished to see dogs roll over on command, or beg, or walk on their hind legs, all of which would have been altogether too show-offy for Prima, and which Jenny would surely have disdained as beneath her dignity. In any case, I could never have managed to teach the girls such tricks. Truth to tell, I never managed to teach them much of anything. Jenny was self-taught in all matters concerning deportment, and Prima was somehow Jenny-taught, by a system the secret of which entirely eluded me.

Jenny was with me first. When I went to the breeder's home to pick a puppy from the litter, her brothers and sisters were busy at something across the pen, but Jenny saw me and dashed over to greet me and to announce that I had been chosen for her future partner. I took her home that evening, and by the next morning she had somehow housebroken herself. I had never heard of a dog doing that, and I was utterly bewildered, but I was grateful to find that I had no need to teach her toilet manners.

I did try to teach her about leashes, but she was not fond of being paraded around on a chain like the inferior partner in some bondage relationship. She quickly made it clear on our first day at it that she could walk perfectly well beside me on her own, and if I wanted her to heel, I had only to snap my fingers and she would do so as well as any dog in a show ring, thank you very much. So we gave up leashes, except in those places where they were required by ordinance. She seemed to understand the difference, and would abide them under those circumstances, and behave perfectly well while on one, but with a certain long-suffering attitude and the occasional huff of impatience.

I came in time to believe that she was simply able to divine, by some super-sense, what it was that I wanted, and so could then do it without actual training. Certainly I never met anyone, dog or human, with whom I shared such an uncanny rapport. There was the time, for instance, during her puppyhood, when she developed a penchant for eating things. She never quite got over that, and throughout most of her life regarded anything that didn't bark back at her or run faster than she could as fair game for a snack.

On this occasion, she ate a palm tree. It was only a small one, admittedly, in a little pot on the floor by the window, where I thought it would be encouraged to grow into something large and lush and add a certain opulence to my not very elegant decor.

I don't mean that she ate a leaf or two. I mean, she ate it: leaves, trunk, roots, everything but the pot and the soil. It seemed to do her no lasting damage, but you have never known dog gas until yours has devoured a palm tree.

I discussed this chewing issue with her breeder, afraid of what might succumb next to her peculiar appetite, and the breeder said, you must surprise her at it, and scold her while she is in the act.

That sounded reasonable enough. I left her home alone the next afternoon, got in the car, slamming the door loudly for her benefit, drove several blocks away and parked. I stole back to the house, crawled around the corner, literally on hands and knees, and lifted my head to look in through the den window?and found Jenny sitting inside staring directly at me with an amused expression. All in all, I thought it wiser just to buy no more palm trees.

######

The girls shared my life for the better part of fifteen happy and loving years. About halfway through that span, we moved to a cabin in the mountains. They loved it: the great outdoors, exploring together, creeks to splash in, all sorts of scents to investigate. In the summer we took long treks in the woods. In the winter, they liked me to throw snowballs for them to catch. They got friendly with the squirrels, who lost their fear of the girls and would leap over Prima where she slept in the doorway to come inside and beg for a snack. Jenny was a jumper, and would dash at and over the most astonishing obstacles while I gaped open mouthed. Prima liked to run, because it was something at which she could beat both of us, since I was slow and Jenny, incurably curious, was forever distracted from their races by something new that had captured her attention. Prima was not much of a swimmer, but, as a spaniel, Jenny was, and she would plunge with delight into any stream, pond or pool, although a single raindrop on her nose was enough to cut short any walk beyond the bare necessity of business.

Prima discovered that the field mice were afraid of her, and it bolstered her self-esteem to think that someone thought her ferocious. Not so very ferocious, however. She came home one day with what appeared to be an odd case of the mumps, her cheeks swollen grotesquely. She came directly to me and began to disgorge from her mouth, one, two, three, six in all, baby bunnies, obviously newborn, quite unharmed. She had brought them home for me to raise, apparently?no doubt having innocently terrified their desolate mother into abandoning them. Jennie regarded these blind, helpless intruders with scorn and refused to have anything to do with what she plainly regarded as an unseemly business in a dog household, but Prima stayed close at hand for days and watched with hopeful eye as I did my best to save her orphans. It was to no avail, however. She seemed to grieve when I buried them in a box in the backyard, and Jenny sat dutifully, if unmoved, by her side throughout the little ceremony.

Jenny still ate shamelessly, preferably people food: the stem ends of tomatoes, pieces of carrots or celery, pie or cake; if it was on my plate or in my hand, it was surely meant for her as well, as she saw it. If a visitor left a strawberry daiquiri sit on the floor by her deck chair, she would shortly find her glass mysteriously empty, and Jenny would sport a pink moustache. Prima, on the other hand, would eat and drink only proper dog things. If I attempted to test her by hiding a couple of green peas in her kibble, the bowl would be licked clean when she was finished, and the peas resting untouched in its bottom.

The years passed, and we all got older. Jenny went mostly blind, and did not hear well, and she had a bad back, from all that youthful jumping. She liked to doze on the deck in the afternoon sun, and Prima and I would sit guard to watch for any hungry coyotes, who tended to look at Jenny as something desirous to be taken home for dinner and would sometimes steal close to extend the invitation.

Prima got a little gray around the snout, and you could see that her hip bothered her when the weather got cold, but otherwise she remained frisky and looked quite young for her years. She had finally grown into those jackrabbit ears and was, I thought, quite a handsome little devil, still shy, but less painfully than before.

They would not sleep in my bed, even when invited in the dead of winter, but they must be right next to it on the floor, and together, of course. When Jenny stumbled one night and fell down the stairs from the loft bedroom, I made my bed on the living room floor in front of the fireplace, and that was where the three of us slept afterward. Jenny sometimes snored. Prima liked to have me warm my feet on her back.

As a result, no doubt, of her reckless eating, Jenny developed a stomach tumor, which had to be removed?with much trepidation on my part, because the doctor warned me that surgery was iffy at her age. She survived, but I began to worry about her mortality. She was fifteen now, Prima fourteen. That was old for dogs of their size, their doctor informed me.

Astonishingly, it was Prima, who had always seemed the picture of health, whom I lost first. She got a fever, sudden and severe. I rushed her to the hospital, and the doctor put her on an intravenous solution to combat the dehydration, and I left her with him. He called me the next morning to say we had lost her.

Her death was painful to me, but watching Jenny over the next few weeks was nearly unbearable. Carson McCullers says that there is a lover and a beloved, and that they come from different countries. No one outside of any relationship can ever, of course, know its intricacies, and certainly theirs was one much of which was beyond my ken, but I had always had the impression that, in this pairing, Jenny was the beloved, and Prima the lover.

I said before that the relationship that had existed between the two of them was lesbian in nature, but I have no way of determining that for certain, and I have no doubt that there are some who would argue that it was really, say, more a matter of "sisters." That may well be, but of one thing there could be no possible argument: it was love, as profound as any celebrated by bard or songsmith.

Jenny spent her first day alone searching the house for her beloved friend and, concluding, finally, that she was truly gone, she stopped eating. Jenny, who had sometimes seemed to live to eat, never ate again.
