Boisterous children and antique mahogany pedestal desks ? yes, it ...

A Singapore businesswoman has news for families in Lancashire and Cumbria; antique marquetry furniture and young children really can live under the same roof, even when it?s the home of your mother-in-law.

Violet Lim is a successful young businesswoman who, with her husband Lee, founded the first online speed-dating site and professional lunch dating agency in Asia. Outside her working environment, however, she plays the traditional role of a wife and mother, even sharing her parents-in-law?s Singapore home ? a common occurrence if the marriage is to the family?s first son. Violet is one of the growing number of women in the Far East who are proving it?s possible to balance a modern career with a traditional family lifestyle.

The Lim?s are also proof that it?s possible to have a home full of valuable antiques even with happy, boisterous children running around. The three storey, traditionally built bungalow is inhabited by four generations of the same family, with the youngest taught from an early age to respect and cherish their beautiful home. Decorated in Oriental Balinese style, it houses more than 100 antiques, collected by Lee?s grandfather and parents. Ranging from porcelain vases to antique cabinets, a Lancashire visitor would feel totally at home here, as there?s a chinoiserie feel reminiscent of the Oriental inspired furniture made in Europe from the 17th Century onwards.

Rather than buying flat-pack furniture for your children?s bedroom, why not visit an antique dealer? In Preston, there are antique chests and open bookcases which have truly stood the test of time.
