The Easton High School Class of 1946?s reunion committee has launched an effort to raise money to keep the annual Easton-Phillipsburg football game on live television.
Sid Kaplan, a member of the committee, said this morning that committee chairwoman Marion Day came up with the idea. Kaplan, 89, who first started attending the rivalry games in 1939, said the hope is to appeal to other reunion committees in both the Easton area and Phillipsburg area.
?We?re starting it off with $500 and if you hit all the classes that went to school in Easton and Phillipsburg, you?re going to have no problem, I think,? Kaplan said of the goal of $2,500.
That figure is the amount of money the Easton Area School Board this week voted to accept in a television deal with Service Electric Cable TV & Communications. The deal gives Service Electric exclusive rights to broadcast the game on tape delay on Thanksgiving Day. It has previously aired live, but school board members said they hope the tape delay will encourage people to attend the game, which had 900 unsold tickets last year.
Kaplan said it?s difficult for him and others to attend the game anymore.
?I have a hard time making it up and down the steps at the stadium,? he said. ?It should be on (live TV)? not only for us, but for everybody in the area.?
