Forbes has released its list of top colleges in America for the sixth year, and Syracuse University earned a rank of 123rd out of 650 institutions.
Forbes partnered with the Center for College Affordability and Productivity to create its ranking, and touts the system as standing apart from others because it focuses on "output over input." Factors that determine the ratings include things like likelihood to graduate in four years, debt accumulation, job placement and leadership potential within a student's chosen field, and interesting classes.
The ranking also provides a detailed profile on each institution, including a variety of statistics like student population, population broken down by gender and ethnicity, student to faculty ratio and total annual cost as well as a list of prominent alumni.
The list also rates Syracuse University as #92 out of private colleges, #62 in research universities and #58 in the Northeast. SU is #15 in New York state, after schools like Columbia (#5 overall), Cornell (#19) and New York University (#56), but ahead of every SUNY and CUNY institution on the list.
Where does Syracuse University stand in other college rankings?
Last year, SU just missed the top 100 most expensive colleges in the U.S., according to Campus Grotto. The total annual cost for SU at that time was $52,696, including tuition, room and board and required fees.
Forbes' list estimates SU's total annual cost this year as $55,600, but that includes books and supplies.
In May, PayScale.com released its ranking of colleges in terms of return on investment. Syracuse University was #360 out of 1,511 colleges analyzed, with the class of 2012 predicted to earn a return of $653,400 over 30 years.
That number was generated based on the difference between what a student could expect to earn over 30 years as a result of graduating from SU, less what that person would have made over 34 to 36 years with just a high school diploma, minus the cost of attending the college.
And finally, Syracuse University's Carrier Dome ranked 78th out of 124 college football stadiums by Stadium Journey Magazine, based on categories like Official Review, Crowd Review, Food & Drink, Entertainment and Lodging.
Forbes gave Stanford University in California the coveted #1 spot, and Oklahoma Wesleyan University the bottom rank of #650.
